see... just to fill my curiouscity.. i need you guy to aswer this~

what's the different between humbucker and single coil?

i mean i know that humbucker it got hum canceling but when i try the single coil ( fender Strats ), p90 its got "sharp" sound while the humbucker its fatter.. but its there something else that i dont know..? please explain it to me

and which one you choose single coil ( LP Gold Top with p90 or strats or tele ) OR humbucker ( PRS, gibson, epi LP )

humbuck is two single coils..

one cancels the noise that's produced by a single coil.

But it also attentuates highs, and increases lows, and is more powerful.

p90 is a larger single coil.

they also have different mid range tones, and the balance of lows highs and mids varys.

You'll find different coil winding lengths make a difference..

stevie ray uses, for example, overwound.

Vintage gibsons and fenders were not all wound exactly the same number of turns either.

some modern humbucks have different numbers of turns on each coil.

The classis guitars and pickups are classics for a reason.

The designs were smart, and effective. And they are the standard by which we judge all others, even today.

Preference of a fender tele versus a gibson seth lover .. ..it's just unanswerable by anyone but you!

p90s often get referred to as in between.. which I don't consider a fair call. They may have some of both characteristics, but they are thier own

animal, if not species.

I choose p90s on my sheri. and one p90 and one humbuck on the lp.

my teles and strats, so far, have all stuck with standard single coils. I haven't found a stacked single coil, *a humbuck* that I'm willing to trade over to, yet.

toss in the active pups and you're off and running for sure..!

that's the basic stuff..

TWANG covered the subject quite well. I will add that the advantage of a humbucker (dual coil) over the single coil variant is that it is possible to split the dual coil into a single coil or even place these two singoe coils from a single pickup into series for more variations. With the proper switching you can achieve 21 variations of pickup configuration with a pair of humbuckers.

It's worth a try...
