While recording in Memphis, Tenn., Beck paid a visit to a popular music store called Strings and Things to check out the stock. The guitar that caught his attention was a ’54 Gibson Les Paul that a customer had dropped in for some very specific modifications. One request was that its original Goldtop finish be stripped off in favor of a deep chocolate-brown finish, a color that turned out to exhibit some oxblood tints in certain light. Other modifications included the installation of full-size humbucking pickups in place of the P-90s, altering the full and rounded early ’50s neck shape to a slightly thinner profile and changing the original tuners for modern replacements. Legend has it that the customer didn’t like the results … but Jeff Beck did. He purchased the modified Les Paul from the store, and ended up playing it extensively on tour and in the studio. He even gave it pride of place on the cover shot of his milestone 1975 album, Blow By Blow. A tone legend was born.

You'll be able to pick it up for a cool $5k........ I really thought guitars would decline in price considering the economy:-s

Make it $2800 and I'd give it serious thought.

I bet he didn't pay 2800.00. *G*

No' date=' he probably didn't pay half of that...here's some info from Strings And Things web site...

How Did We Customize It?

A customer of ours from Dyersburg, TN asked us to customize it according to these specifications:

Finish it entirely in chocolate brown.

Replace all the nickel parts with Gibson Gold plated parts.

Install full size humbucking pickups.

Reshape the neck and make it slightly thinner.

There were a few other small modifications but that's the gist of the customization. When the guy returned to the store to pick up his creation, he took one look at it and said he didn't want it. We told him "NO PROBLEM!" because we thought it was KILLER and had grown kinda fond of it! We put it on the show floor and all the Memphis 'pickers' thought it was cool. The color was definitely strange, but the gold parts did a number on the finished look. It was a very unusual guitar!

How Did Jeff Find Out About It?

So, Jeff happened to be in town recording an album at Steve Cropper's Transmaximus Studios. He came by the store one day looking for a new guitar. He had been to Memphis several times before, the first of which was a small time tour of the Yard Birds playing the club circuit. He returned again to Memphis this time with another band called Beck, Bogart and Appice. Bogart and Appice had been with a most incredible group called Vanilla Fudge. (These guys were awesome. Find some of their old stuff and take a listen. I think that they did two albums. This may be a good link to VF)

Anyway, Jeff played a few guitars, but found nothing that he liked. He saw the chocolate Les Paul and wondered what it was. We told him about how it came to be and he asked to plug it in. Jeff Beck has got to be one of the most underrated guitar players ever. He is absolutely one of the most soulful and stylist guitarists that England ever produced, but it seems like all his fellow Englishmen pickers have always gotten more praise. But not here at Strings & Things!

Well, Jeff went nuts over the Chocolate Les Paul and said "how much?" We talked money for a brief moment and he bought it. We asked him to sign the bathroom door and he did. He drew a little street rod and signed his name under it. His drawing was really very good. He obviously can do more that play guitar.

He came, he played, he bought, he left! But we saw him two more times after that. Once, when he played Memphis with Jan Hammer. (if I remember it correctly?) A Memphis friend of his, Buddy Davis, gave him a '50's Fender Esquire at the North Hall at Sound Check. The second time was when Jeff returned to the store to get another Les Paul because his roadie knocked the chocolate L.P. over and cracked the neck.

Jeff Also Spotted a '55 All Gold L.P. In Our Collection.

He loved that handrest only tailpiece and I would have to agree. I have a late transition '53 Gold Top with the handrest only and the intoe is perfect (don't ask me how). With the handrest only, the body contact is massive and the wood effect on the tone is the most I've ever heard. Even thought nothing in the collection was for sale, he wanted it and we sold it to him. It's hard to say 'no' to guys like him.

If you ever get to Memphis the shop is a must see and Chris the owner is a pretty cool guy...but yeah, the reissue is just more over-priced crap from Gibson with a huge profit margin..

This all brings up a question which has been bothering me lately.

Today a new Gibson Les Paul runs anywhere from 2 (standard) to 4 thousand (custom), and the murphy aged and special limited editions cost a whole lot more than that. How much did they cost in the old days? I know Gibsons were always a bit pricey, but it seems to me that they must have gone up in price even more than inflation would explain, or am I being unfair?

Maybe some of the older and more experienced of you out there could offer a little insight...

LOL

In other words you paid more than what they list priced for at a Guitar Center sale...right...sure you did...

Again, you show yourself to be completely full of sh!t...I'm holding in my hand the Spring 1981 Music Emporium catalog

Gibson Les Paul Custom with hard shell case -$699.

Everything with you is an exaggeration.or a total lie....but..

I'd love to see this $1300 1981 Les Paul Custom...still waiting on that photo...though somehow I know the odds are against it even existing...you should do a bit of research before you start spewing your line of bullsh!t...if you'd had you'd actually know what a Gibson Les Paul Custom cost in 1981...I really don't get it...I'd be embarrassed to spew this utter nonsense and constantly get caught up in these completely ridiculous and unbelievable fairy tales...so, let's see a photo of this guitar...it's unfortunate for you that there are people who actually know the crap you try to get over with...easy enough to shut me up...post a photo and some proof like your sales receipt that you paid $1300 for a Gibson Les Paul Custom new in 1981..because you and I both know that you didn't , don't we? Pathetic.

By the way...my band mate only paid $1600 for his brand new Les Paul Custom in 1994..you need to do more research or hang out where nobody actually knows anything...

Anyway, i think the Jeff Beck Les Paul looks relly cool, but there is no way I could afford that in a million years. In fact, right now, I'm beginning to think that a regular Gibson is getting further and further out of reach!

The LP that alot of folks have been waiting for will be hitting the stands in the next couple of weeks - the Mike Bloomfield burst '59 Lester. Wonder of they will include the missing binding and several types of knobs ya saw on Bloomfield's '59.

ps:

http://www.vintageguitars.org.uk/gib80p21.php

they'll probably be able to tell you list.

I'd venture list price was well above the reintroduced flying V listed below:

The Flying V2 was introduced in mid-1979, taking pride of place on the cover of the June '79 price list,

1st June 1979 $1199

1st July 1980 $1299

I'd also like to point out that I paid 378.00 for a rick 4001 in 1981 with hard case.

But locally, they sold for nearly a thousand bucks.

So listing music emporiums prices, a catalogue not well known at all at the time, is pure utter nonsense for sure.

Back in those days, it all depended on where you lived. And commonly we all paid higher prices.

The mere fact that you none of this was taken into account.. that is: many places asked for and got LIST, tells me that once

again somebody's full of theirself. and not much interested in being friendly, exchaning information, being supportive, or even

enjoying the forum.

On second thought, I think I'll go for the spray.

In 1955, a Standard went for $235 and a Custom for $360.

By 1960 a Standard would cost you $265 and a Custom $375. The case would run ya another $40 or so bucks.

Back when I went looking for my first "good "guitar - a '58 Lester would go for around $350. That was more scratch than I could come up with back then so I opted to go with the $150 '58 Tele. While the Tele remained my #1 guitar for alot of decades this definitely falls in the one of those not too bright life decisions.
