fenrirlupus Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 what exactly are the differences/are there any real differences that can be determined by plate color? i know there are some black plate tubes that are considered to be the best of their kind of tube, but does it have anything to do with the color, or is that just a way to distinguish between different tubes? (like a black plate rca tube vs. a gray plate rca tube) EDIT: while I'm at it, what kind of differences in sound can the shape of a tube make? (how will a "coke bottle" tube sound compared to a "straight bottle" tube?)
cGil Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 Coke bottle look cool! Can't say as the glass makes much of a difference, but then it'd probably be kinda hard to find two identically constructed tubes in different bottles to compare. Anyway, here are some reviews you may find interesting. http://www.watfordvalves.com/reports.asp Gil...

cGil Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Here's a big fat one. But only a little history and general specs. Not much of a tone review. http://www.r-type.org/exhib/aad0118.htm Look for some reviews on KT66's. Some are coke bottle shaped, and some aren't. Unfortunately, it'll still be an apples to oranges comparison regarding glass cuz each manufacturer's tube guts won't be exactly the same as the next manufacturer's tubes. Gil...

Gil...[/quote'] true enough, but i think it should follow the same general logic between two tubes from the same company... but i'm not sure. i think leslie speakers used to use coke bottle tubes and i think i saw a page that said that putting a straight bottle tube in would change the sound... but it didn't say how...
