Evolving Deletions

I'm thinking seriously about modding my Version 3 head with the Marshall type mods. I've done

this before on a Ver.2 along with the addition of a Hammond 125ESE and the difference between

it and my new stocker is leaving me pretty cold. After checking some of the stored info on the mod

intro thread I came across a reference to not doing a heater mod to a Ver.2 or 3 due to evolving

upgrades...which got me to thinking.

If I did the same mods I previously did on the Ver.2 to the new Ver.3 is there anything that I should

omit, or has anything been discovered that should be incorporated? Seems as if I remember something

about cutting through a trace on the green board that's different or not done on the black one? There

was some discussion there for a while on which was the better OT route the 125ESE or the Heyboyer,

(model unknown): what was the outcome of that?

In a nutshell: if you were looking for Marshally Tone and more outright punch what would be your

detailed list of things to do and stuff to change on a Version 3 Head considering anything that might

be different from it's previous configurations?

One other thing I'd like to add on this one is a tone control, (tone stack?), how is this accomplished?

I also remember a lot of discussion about a NFB switch, (negative feedback I think), never was real

clear on what that did or what it was either.... sorry for the usual extended list of inquiry but If anybody

was looking for the source of this info it would be found here. Thanks in advance to any and all who

respond to this plea for aid..............

The Heyboer sounds a lot like the v3 VJr OT, although maybe a little more sophisticated in some esoteric way. The Hammonds are the same, although slightly more beefy, so the bang for the buck factor just isn't there compared to swapping a v1 or v2 VJr OT.

The v3 VJr already has 1.5k cathode resistors, and a 1M in R1. SEwatt has all the answers to all your questions regarding tone pots and NFB. Here's something that may help in your planning.

Thanks Gil that does give me some things to consider... spent some time on SEwatt and that helped as well.

Has anybody got any other V3 mod experiences they'ed like to throw into the ring on this one?

negative feedback reduces your volume.. you get more clean on the dial.

you don't really get louder clean. it just breaks up later.

I like it though, it's a different sound with that broader range.

it's handy for lower volume practice and for recording, too.

I put mine on a three way.. so you have stock, c3 lifted which is just a bit less volume and slightly different thinner tone, and c3 lifted nfb engaged.

you can change the value of the nfb resistor and thereby change the amount of volume you reduce.

I like the conjunctive filter.. mine is also on a three way, on off on, with two values used.. I think it was for the cap? I've forgotten since I

only did that on one amp.

I like the gain, tweed tone, loop de jr, standby, rear mounted fuse holder, nfb 3 way combination.

I think that's as much as I need to get the vj doing everything I need out of it.

vvr is popular with some, I just crank that sucker.
