Maybe there should be a standard' date=' forum-approved answer for this one. Maybe the R9? Then when someone asks again this weekend which one to buy we can all just say "R9". [/quote']

Good thinking, but if I see one more "which reissue is better?" pole, I'm gonna snap!

'58 (or '57's)...all day long. Every bit as good as the others. No flame = 1/2 the price! '59's and '60's are for the guy that needs to say "and this one costs $5800!!!". Save the bucks or buy two '58's or three USA Standards.

RRU, I agree with you for the most part. I have an R9, bought it because it was...and still is...the best guitar I've played.

I wasn't in the market for a R9, but it just so happened that the best guitar I found was a R9.

No other R7, R8 or R9 comes close. I mean that...and trust me, I've looked and looked for a better reissue and haven't been able to find one to this day.

Not all guys needs to say "and this one costs $5800!!!"

I bought my R9 because it is by far, the best instrument I have ever played.

Words can't describe it.

Like the new avatar TG.

When I bought my studio, I played every LP in the store and it played and sounded better than all the rest. Sometimes model and price dont mean squat. I ran into the same thing with my Ibanex. I wanted a semi hollow body and it outplayed and sounded better than the $2 - 3000 335's and Gretsch's that were there.

I'm sure your happy with it. I say "placebo effect". Granted there are quite a few basic differences in the stratifications of models, but very little in the VOS series. USA Standard have lumber quality wood, these days...better for a table than a fine instrument. The only differences I find the '57-'58-'59-'60 VOS's is some flamed wood and the neck profile. Ashetics....but if you think it sounds better, than it probably does.

Try a little test. Turn around backwards and don't peek. Have your buddy play a few rifs with one of each. If you can tell the difference, I'll pay for your lunch!

Maybe I'll put something on YouTube for a comparison. I'll have to borrow a '59 and a '60 though...I only have '57's & '58's .

Sorry to disagree RRU. My son and I were in GC in the Gibson room, I was on a Standard, and he was on an R7 (the one I eventually purchased). We were seated across from each other, playing through a Marshall 50 watt head and 412 cab's. There was a very noticeable difference between the two. Enough so, that we swapped cords, then eventually guitars. I would not say either sounded better or worse, but definitely different. Needless to say, he didn't get the Goldtop back. Sorry son, I love ya, but this one is mine!!! Hehehe :D :D O:) Mmmm shiny

hes not arguing about Stds and RIs. he's saying that you couldnt tell the difference between an R8 and a R9.
