Is the Slash Goldtop "Weight Relived"?

I was killing some time in my local Guitar Center today (actually, I walked out with the Vox reissue Wah Wah pedal), and I finally decided to pick up one of the Slash Goldtops and take it for a spin. The thing feels like its filled with styrofoam ... or possibly helium!

Just to make sure I hadn't suddenly developed unfound upper body stregnth, I grabbed the Epi LP Custom right next to it and it felt like the slab of wood you would expect. Honestly, the Goldtop felt lighter that my chambered LP Ultra. It played okay, I guess. They've knocked the price down to $799, by the way and it still includes all of the "case candy". My favorite parts of the guitar were the tuners ... and the color is actually prettier than the Gibson version IMHO.

Wow really? I read in a SLash interview that he made sure his guitars were heavy. He hates teh chambered bodies. DId u try another slahs model?

I picked up the Slash model in tobacco sunburst a couple days ago at GC and played around on it a few minutes. i have heard these models have the 50s neck profile but it didnt feel any larger to me than a Standard Epi and it was also VERY light.

Well, Epiphone's site lists the weight of the Goldtop at 8.1 pounds, so I'll guess I'll have to amend my original statement about it feeling lighter than my Ultra ... which Epi says is between 5.5 and 6 pounds. They don't list the weight of my Prophecy Les Paul on their spec sheet, but it feels MUCH heavier than either of the other two, as did the ebony Les Paul Custom I tried right after the Slash Goldtop.

Epiphone is not so great at listing spec's on their guitars. I imagine it's because they can vary so much depending on where they are actually being produced.

Anyway, I liked the Slash Goldtop ... it played and sounded just fine. At the new GC price of $799 with the case and all the candy, it's kinda been on my mind (just what I needed).

You would have to assume they have access to any Epi/Gibson information. From what I've heard dicussed in a few similar threads, its tough enough to get any info directly from the company itself ... straight from the horses mouth as it were. Besides, if the information is available, you can usually pick it up from one or two of the guys in here anyway

The Slash Goldtop and Plustop are not weight relieved. Mahogany can vary in weight (sometimes signifcantly) from one guitar to another depending upon the moisture and mineral content of the wood. It could be that the LP Custom you picked up was a particularly heavy one.

The Ultra-II is chambered and is generally about 20-25% lighter than our regular LP.

On another note, someone said on this thread that the neck profile on the Epiphone Slash is '50's like. It is not. It's a Slash profile that more resembles our '60's SlimTaper neck profile. Thanks.

Wow... What just happened here? Did a mod... actually... POST? LOL... Let's hope this is the start of a trend. Could make the forum a much more informative place, with actual "official" responses like that one.

Thanks for the info, Epi! (I'll resist the urge to add "welcome to the forum", but only just barely, LOL!)

Holy Crap! glad I didn't take a vacation or go on High-Ate-Us and missed that.... That was better than

one those genuwine "Touches from God" that the tele-evangelical preechers sell when they need funds

for the new mission in Tah-Hee-Tee. Wait, lightning just struck a tree in the back yard, must be a sign...

The mod should know what hes talking about but to me I found the slash neck quite thick and round compared to my 2008 LP std. Dont know the difference between 50's-60's necks ect

The Slash neck profile is more 60s slim taper like. It is no where near as fat as the Gibson Les Paul Studio models I have owned. I would be tempted to purchase but not for $999, which GC is asking.

Ym LP neck must be pretty thin then as that was quite a bit bigger in general
