aphawki Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Ok so always looking for something that looks really cool I have seen that many of you have your amps "upside down". (Well right side up I suppose if you look at all other tube amps!). I just wanted to know if it was just a matter of flipping the amp upside down and then just setting up your own labeling on the front side as well as putting the handle on the top? Or...is there anything internally that you are having to do? By the way Twang...that is awesome how you have the front venting above your controls...very nice!! And also not to leave out the killer paint scheme M-theory! Thanks in advance for the help!!!
Eracer_Team Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 flipping is really easy and if you really want you can flip the power switch. here's the easy part. unscrew the feet form the bottom. then flip the amp, on one of the corner screws undo one then screw the feet back in using the feet screws. now file the amp back over and in the holes that the feet were in use the corner screws back into the empty screw holes. so you now have the feet the 'correct' way. Now the power switch,,, if you really want your power switch to move up for on and down for off then heres what to do. Don't pull the wires off the switch! you'll break it. just use you exacto knife to cut away the sticky glue from around the switch.. there are a couple of push tabs on the top and bottom of this switch (on the inside) and once you've dug enough white glue from the switch just push down on the tabs and push the switch out the hole then flip it and snap it back in (all with the wires attached). Volume know: turn the amp to '0' pull the volume know of and place it in the 'new' zero position pointing down to the bottom left. (oh the handle.. they have nuts under the silver foil shield, so forget those. unscrew the handle, take the screws to home depot and match up the threads to a nut, drill a couple of holes into the new top and screw the handle into the new nuts) Labels and face plate, yup,, if you don't like volume, input and power being upside down, you'll have to remove the letters with some acidtone and redo labels for yourself lab
aphawki Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 PERFECT!!! That will be on the "to do" list for tonight! Thank you so much for the walk through. That should keep me busy for a bit longer until I get up the courage to do a more complex mod to it!
TWANG Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 yep. *S* and thanks. I like the look of it. I put extra sheilding inside.. copper and aluminum.. hoping I could get a little more tube glow action.. but it turns out I have to shut off the lights and then I trip over my guitar cord. I got some little shiny metal caps at the hardware store.. like the ones used to cover the chassis screw holes.. and I'm debating whether to use them on the top where the screws are showing. And also underneath, where the old handle screw holes are. I've got some red tolex that nearly matches and I was thinking of making some boxer shorts out of it. *G* TWANG
aphawki Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 Yeah I really didn't even know where to start with a "quote" on that one...I started thinking it was about the tripping on the cord in the dark...but then I got to the sweet tolex boxers...I think you might be onto something there. Maybe whip them up and slap em on Ebay. Any ideas on removing the Epiphone emblem off the old front? Don't really feel like ripping or busting anything too bad. But I would imagine there is a way to get that off there so I can still reuse it...granted I will have to get something to restick it with.
aphawki Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 Ok so I just answered my own question. I see that Epiphone is all about holes in amps. Can someone please tell me what the motivation is behind the 3 holes placed behind the Epiphone symbol on the front??? So...just some glue wouldn't have worked?
Cole Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 I flipped my head and i took the emblem off with a screwdriver to pry it off. To re aplly it i just cut off the middle peg with some wire cutters then used a metal file to sand it down flat and put a bit of craft glue on the two remaining pegs and put back in and it fits perfectly and covers the old center hole.
aphawki Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 Ahh ok got ya. Yeah for some reason they must have known this one was going to Iowa and decided to make it F5 Tornado proof.
TWANG Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 the logo has to be pried off left center right left center right to keep from breaking the plastic pegs. You can hook it to the screen with a couple little clips from the hardware store. sometimes the glue sticks like mad and the panels have to be pried off carefully to avoid tearing the tolex. I also got some screen at the hardware store. It's plasticy so I stole the metal screen from another head .. that way each would match.. the plasticy stuff wont melt.. it just wasn't exact and I wanted to be anal about it. TWANG
aphawki Posted February 10, 2009 Author Posted February 10, 2009 So did you put mesh on the backside of the amp too? Or why was the extra mesh needed??
TWANG Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 I put it in the front panel.. had to redo the tolex. I just thought I'd try the see through look. TWANG
aphawki Posted February 10, 2009 Author Posted February 10, 2009 Ahh very cool. I bet that looks really nice. I don't think I'm am quite up for that woodworking task yet! I will leave that to the pros!
