J-45 Rosewood owners...tell me about it!

My bandmate owns an '05, and it's GREAT. I really covet it. It has a big, chocolatey, bold and warm sound-I used that, my Hummingbird and my SJ200 for all of the rhythm parts on my band's forthcoming album, and my producer ended up referring to the RW J45 as the "body" guitar because it sounded so full and warm recorded.

We started working together in '06, and the guitar has opened up a great deal since then, and has a lot more breath in the sound...it's benefitted from a killer setup, too. It sounds great with Phosphor Bronze 12s, but I'd like to try Bronze 80/20 12s on it to add a bit of bite in the top end. But then again, it's not my guitar so I can't really do that!!

I'd recommend it, though. Try a J45 Hog and RW, and also a Hummingbird and Dove. All subtle variations on the same vibe, but one of them will speak to you more than the others. Happy shopping!!

thanks!

I loved the one i played at the store...much 'fuller' and warmer than the hog45 (which i also liked very much but when played side by side with the rosewood..it sounded thin.)...my only concern is that might it be TOO warm? might it end up being too bassy, too boomy?

re: set up...what did they change from the factory set up?

I love my J-45RW. It is my "benchmark" guitar, if you know what I mean. All others are eventually compared against it.

Mine is real sweet, full and warm. Very "shimmer-y". My never gets boomy (especially compared to my SJ-200); mostly because I don't play with heavy attack (no pick; flesh fingers for all).

Setup was a little tricky on mine. After a lop of tweaking of saddle / truss rod / strings I found an acceptable balance (still a tad too high at the upper / dusty end; but I can live with it). I ended up with bone saddle and EXP mediums.

Honestly, it is the best, most comfortable, most beautiful sounding/looking guitar I have ever played.

How is that for a recommendation?

As much as I can talk guitars at length, the best I can say about the Rosie is I sat down to play it in the shop and it just felt and sounded right and I knew I was going to end up buying it. I already had a J-100 XTRA which I love, but the neck on that is relatively thin. I like the feel of a fat '50's Gibson neck, and the Rosie had that. The tones were sweet and full, with good definition on all the strings - strong highs but still the traditional Gibson acoustic "thunk" in the bass.

The construction was good, but Gibson could have done better in how they cut the bridge, which fit extremely loosely - I eventually got a new one cut that fit better into the bridge plate, a simple and relatively inexpensive operation by a competent luthier.

I've now had it for a bit over 4 years. I still enjoy it greatly, it is my "go to" guitar for just sitting and picking by myself. For jamming with others, I lean more towards the J-100 as it projects a bit better IMHO.

I had one for a year, alas in a moment of GAS insanity, I sold it. I wish I had it back. In fact, I am lurking for a great deal on one or might go with a AJ short scale. In any case, other than a few finish cracks that I was disappointed in, I LOVED IT - sounded so good, played like a dream, just an all around great guitar that could be finger picked lightly, flat-picked, or stummed. Man, I wish I had that guitar back! =P~
