Ben1281734138 Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Hi everyone, I just bought an Epiphone Valve Standard last week brand new, it was the last one in the shop. I love everything about the amp except for a few inconsistencies. This is my first tube amp so i didn't know what to expect. I've looked on some forums about this amp and a few other people have had the same problem with hum. It's really weird because when i start using the amp there isn't much feedback, then after 30 mins or so(when the tubes are hot) it makes this real annoying hum. When i put the gain on 0 the hum is still there and it increases with MV knob. Also sometimes when i switch to standby it makes a pop noise that doesn't good for the speakers(or wherever it's coming from). It may be the tubes, but during random times i can hear a burning sound inside the amp. I'm just curious as to whether all these things are common in tube amps and what can i do to fix it. Or should i ring up the guitar shop from where i bought it and ask for a refund. Thanks alot, Ben. :-
cGil Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Yeah, that dog's got a serious flea problem. No doubt about it. Probably a bad solder joint on a quick connect somewhere, and a wire routing issue for the hum. If you don't want to dive into the seriously deep end of DIY amp repairs, either get your money back, or make them fix it under warranty and make do without it till it gets fixed. Gil...
Ben1281734138 Posted February 12, 2009 Author Posted February 12, 2009 ive uploaded the hum noise, the hum is high pitched than usual. Is this normal? Heres the link: AmpHum

Ben1281734138 Posted February 18, 2009 Author Posted February 18, 2009 This still occurs with all cables disconnected from the guitar. If it makes any difference even with gain on zero and the Master Volume on halfway it still makes the noise. It increases with the MV and when its at full the hum changes sound.
jamescropley1281734044 Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Sounds like an earthing problem. My laney used to do the same.
Ben1281734138 Posted February 20, 2009 Author Posted February 20, 2009 Sounds like an earthing problem. My laney used to do the same. Is this something alot of amps do or should i take it back for warranty service?
Guest icantbuyafender Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 make use of the warranty and give them a detailed description. it does sound like a wiring issue.
Gashole Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 Is this something alot of amps do or should i take it back for warranty service? A tube amp should sound pleasing to your ear-not trying to over simplify. Make sure you are grounded outside the amp-your outlet and electrical hook up-and if you are, everyone is right-take it back quick 'cos its broke. None of that stuff should be going on at all. Some 60 cycle hum through a single coil pickup, sure. But all that you have going on? Definitely not.
Ben1281734138 Posted February 21, 2009 Author Posted February 21, 2009 yeh this even happens when i disconnect all cables from the amp. i did take it back and i don't think the amp tech listened to the buzz properly he probably just thought it was like every other amp(he didn't do anything). Also it was raining that day and cars were driving by so it made it alot harder to hear. But when i'm playing in my room at normal volume i can hear the buzz from 3 metres away. I reckon its gotta do with the tubes because when i start playing the buzz isn't loud, but after 30 minutes it becomes louder.
