Mystery "Epi" Bass

The little information I've been able to find has suggested that these "Epi" basses (without serial numbers) have come up from time to time in these forums....basic idea, no serial number on the headstock, neckplate, or anywhere else I can find. Got it in a trade, was looking for a cheap bass and was willing to let go a cheap guitar.

Oh, and the fellow I got it from suggested it was an Epiphone with the "phone" removed, but I highly doubt it, cause A: it doesn't look like any logo was removed, and B: I've seen two other of these "Epi" basses on craigslist for sale, in black and red, as a matter of fact. That and it's a good bit cheaper quality than the actual Epiphone products I've dealt with.

Well, it's cheap, but it plays pretty well. Two knobs, volume and tone. Depsite the pictures (sorry for the crap cell phone quality) the finish is smooth black and it's actually in nice condition.

Also mentioned in the searches I've done is that the "Epi" brand was a lower division of Epiphone, available only in Europe and Asia (the example they gave was Epi is to Epiphone what Epiphone is to Gibson, but I actually prefer Epiphone to Gibson, so who knows if they're accurate).

Been a while since I've done any HTML, let's see if I can get these pics to show up...any info you all can provide would be awesome...I just like to know where the heck this thing came from. And thanks in advance!

It's an Epiphone Accu-Bass. Since it's almost a direct copy of the Fender Precision, it played off the name: (Accurate/Precision).

Here's a another picture of a white Accu-Bass:

Hope this helped!

Thanks for the info, it certainly seems that it's an Accu-Bass....only thing bugging me now is that mine just says "Epi", whereas all the pics I've seen so far of the Accu-Bass have the full "Epiphone" logo on the headstock....

I suppose somepne could have removed the "phone" part on mine, but it sure doesn't look like it...

But thanks for the info!

Epiphone did that for a short time in the 90's' date=' I believe. Dont know why. Sorry.[/quote']

Maybe they wanted to buildup the "epi" name. Cause people call them an epi all the time, so it obviously worked. :)

Earliest accu bass is made at 1975. Mine Accu bass is made 1975 and it says "Epiphone by Gibson" not "Epi" or "Epiphone". And I checked the serial number and I figured out that its made at 30.3.1975. (sorry bad english, I'm from Finland:D)

Epiphone by Gibson would indicate a late 80's early 90's Sammick made instrument. I belive those had pretty random serial numbers, so the Guitar Dater wouldn't really be accurate here. Unless you bought it in '75. Then clearly I don't know what I'm talking about.

Actually, it's not technically an Accu-Bass. Epi was an entirely different line of guitars meant for the beginner's market. They were made around 1980, and I believe they were from Taiwan.

The only Epiphones made in 1975 were the Japanese Matsumoku basses, specifically the ET-280 & ET-285:

Best I can recall, the Accu-Bass was made in Korea and first appeared in the late '80s (first appeared in the 1989 price list). The by Gibson on the headstock indicates it's one of the first Accu-basses made.
