Phatbuss Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I'm a newbe to tube amps and this forum, so forgive the dumb questions. I was curious to know if the VJ's output wattage is change by the speaker impedance being used. I know with other amps that I've used (solid state bass amps) the output wattage increases as the speaker load decreases. One, of course, can only do this down the load that the particular amp is designed to take. I have the v3 combo with the 4, 8, 16 ohm speaker outs. If I plug a 4 ohm speaker into the 4 ohm out, will I still get 5 watts or slightly more. Or, is the output transformer designed to give the same wattage out of all the speaker outs regardless of load? If so, can one get away with say, and 8 ohm speaker in the 16 ohm jack?
Phatbuss Posted February 13, 2009 Author Posted February 13, 2009 Well, thanks cgil, I read your previous answer and that cleared up my question about putting an 8 ohm load on the 16 ohm jack. Luckily I hadn't done anything dumb yet! But does the amp produce more power out of the 4 ohm jack into a 4 ohm speaker than say the 16 ohm jack into a 16 ohm speaker?
cGil Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Might sound a little cleaner on the 4 into 4. 16 into 16 should get the most from the full length of the secondary winding, and may possibly have more content. But whether the output is more powerful is up in the air. Ain't got a scope. Gil...
