I have just purchased a second hand Thunderbird bass, it has a plate on the back stating it is a Korean model.

Serial number is U03070188, I am a new player, so not sure if it was a good buy or not, just liked the finish and the dealer told me it was "A RARE MODEL" would just like some more information on it, (year of make etc!)

The dealer told me new ones are made in china, and this model is much better, is this the case?

Thanks in advance for ANY information anyone can provide.

Congrats on your new bass! The Korean Epis are considered of better quality than the newer Chinese Epiphones. I dont know how "rare" it is other than the fact that Epi doesnt make guitars in Korea anymore. But if I was buying "used", which is usually the case, I would seek out the Korean models over the Chinese or Indonesians.

Heres the info for your bass from

guitardaterproject.org

Your guitar was made at the

Unsung Plant, Korea

July 2003

Production Number: 0188

Wow, thanks that was quick, I thought I would wait ages for a reply!

I suppose what he meant by rare was that it was in such good condition, and a better made guitar than modern ones. I certainly hope so as I paid only £15 pounds less than a new Chinese one would have cost mail order from GAK!

I do not play that well yet, but tried it in the shop and it just felt right.

SO, I justified it by the fact that I could have ordered new and it would not be as good!

besides, I like to support local shops were I can, besides, if any problems I can allways throw it through their window, LOL (joking)

I also have a peavey BX4 bass, spent AGES setting the action up so I could actually play it, and this "epi" was as easy, (if not more so) than my Peavey.

And I just love the classic "Muddy sound" my peavey is much sharper.

Thanks,

I only really started playing to give my young Son "Luke" some encouragement. However, I have really got into it now, and go to two or three Jams a week. Luke is a superb lead player, he has an epiphone Les Paul, but now mainly plays his Jackson Dinky. Luke is left handed and plays a left handed guitar, so finding guitars for him has been a bit of a challenge. He has an audition on Saturday morning with a band, so we are all fairly excited by that.

Yes,

Did visit their website, Never seen thyem forr sale in the UK however.

Took it for using on my weekly lesson last night. My tuitor was very impressed, and I got on fine with it. Did notice what a few people have said about it being "neck Heavy" but TBH, with my elbow firmly jammed into the cut out on the body it did not become a problem. I am getting on well with it, love the mellow tone. Currently concentrating on "Blues" and 12 bar rock and roll, so looks the part as well.

Probably going to fit some new strings this weekend as noticed they are fairly worn, so hope it will be even better then!

Thanks for all your comments.

Well I fitted some "Rotosound Yellow Swing Bass" strings on Saturday, tuned it and tried, all sounds cool.

A bit clearer and slightly higher pitch than before, (fitted a 45 set, which looked identicle in size to what came of, and is what I have on my Peavey Bass. Going to try it at my lesson tonight.

Next problem I am having is finding a gig bag or case for it! (in the UK or mail order?)

My local shop says he can get me one, but lots of money, (almost what I paid for the bass!)

Any ideas???

Hey guys, I usually just flick through these forums just for abit of advice or perhaps to find the odd helpful trick.

Anyway, I too bought a Thunderbird recently and am having that same trouble trying to find a gig bag/case in the UK, I was just wondering if you've had any luck getting hold of one? My local dealers either don't know what a Thunderbird bass is or work with Epiphone.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Crazy Ole Matt! Welcome to the forums!

You can try getting a hard case online: http://www.zzounds.com/item--EPIETBCS

Or, what you can do is ask them if you can try and bring your bass to the shop and find a generic case that will fit the Thunderbird. It happens a lot that they don't have the exact case built for the guitar. That same thing happened with my EB-3. But it might be a little tough to find one with the right size.

Hi, yes I bought a "Rocksac" bag, it fits just fine, and is a really nice bag for £35.00.

I bought it from a shop in Bury St. Edmunds, "soundsplus" they do mail order not sure if the bag is on their site www.soundsplus.co.uk but if you email Nick I am sure he could sort it for you.
