torresfan Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I have a new G400 and I've noticed that the neck is slightly heavier than the body. Does anyone else have this problem?
RSDx Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I have a new G400 and I've noticed that the neck is slightly heavier than the body. Does anyone else have this problem? Normal for the sg style body, I believe.
jcwillow777 Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 That's normal. Just get a good leather strap with suede leather on the inside of the strap. The suede leather will hold your G-400 in place. I don't have any problems with neck dives on any of my G-400s. Get a good set of strap locks too. Congrats on your new G-400. By the way, no pics - it didn't happen.

A nice wide leather strap with the suede on the bottom side will do the trick.
Bender 4 Life Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I detest wide straps..........been concidering adding about 2 lbs. of lead "slugs" around the bottom rear of mine. If I do this, i'll post pics during the process, and let y'all know how it turns out. Other than that, I LOVE my 400
thunderstruck507 Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I've played a couple Gibsons that didn't have the problem, or at least not as bad... I too was curious about the lead weight but don't think theres room in the cavity for enough to matter...I just deal with it
generation zero Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Do what I did with my explorer to counter the same problem... I duct taped about 4 pounds of scrap steel to my strap, near where it attatches to the back end of the guitar. It looked about like a wireless pack, and balanced the guitar perfectly. Also have the impression of a heavier guitar, which I like.
torresfan Posted February 18, 2009 Author Posted February 18, 2009 Thanks Guys. Much appreciated. As requested, a picture of my beautiful G400 in Cherry. I also have a 2000 Fender Stratocaster Deluxe that I got for next to nothing on eBay.
chewy1281734128 Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 i love the weight of mine. its my second, the first had 'gibson' on the truss rod cover. then my brother fell on it and snapped it, replaced it with one which im sure doesnt sound as good...but thas just me i think.

This is one of the reasons I'm not comfortable with SG's- I've tried to love several of them' date=' including the 63 pictured below, but we just don't get on with each other. Played great, sounded great, just not comfortable holding it. [img']http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a308/marvar/63SGLP.jpg[/img]
Muskank Sally Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Rawhide Leather with a non-silk back. Works like a charm
Modorange Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 That's normal. I like the leather strap solution. The savings on shoulder/back problems is well worth the lighter body/lack of balance. Plus if you're holding the neck with your arm anyway, what does it matter.
Guest icantbuyafender Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 haha only SLIGHTLY heavier? the headstock would kiss the floor if u weren't holding it lol.. just one of the quirks that make the SG feel like an SG.

I too was curious about the lead weight but don't think theres room in the cavity for enough to matter...I just deal with it[/quote'] I was actually talking about routing out a cavity identical to the control cavity on the back close to bottom center, using a control cavity cover on it, and adding as much lead/copper/whatever necessary to achieve PERFECT balance. Like I said, if I decide to do this, i'll post pics during and after the project.
charlie brown Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Intesting...my MIJ '61 doesn't have a "neck heavy" problem, at all. In fact, it's very comfortable in the playing position, sitting or standing! I don't remember Gibson'shaving that, either. Must be an "Korean or Chinese" Epiphone G-400 characteristic? (Are they all like that?) CB
Lord Summerisle Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Rawhide Leather with a non-silk back. Works like a charm Sticks like glue (even when attired in one's best wifebeater )
johntrem Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 My solution to the heavy SG neck problem also turned out to be the leather strap-suede underside one. Luckily, I didn't have to buy a new leather strap. I had one from the Seventies, a synthetic leather by the DrSong company. I don't even know if the company is still in existence. Being the cheapskate that I am I'd hate to put out the cash for a leather strap these days. I recently told my guitar playing daughter how we used to pick up Ace guitar straps for $3 back when.

If it was thin enough it it could work. That would be a heavy option.
Dr. Rock Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Being the cheapskate that I am I'd hate to put out the cash for a leather strap these days. I bought mine on ebay for 20 bucks. Check the seller "houseofstrap".

That would be a heavy option. Thanks for the idea !!!!!! thin around the edge, so it sits flush and thicker as it goes into the actual cavity....... ^5 man.....you rock !
Duffy Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 Not sure if the steel control plate is a joke, but it isn't a good idea in my opinion because everything that comes into contact with it is going to ground out, plus it is going to take up space if you inset it into the] cavity which is already small and will encourage wires to ground out, pots, etc. I have a homemade from a purchased leather model strap that is real wide. Mine is made from some real nice black leather from a hide I ordered a while back. The natural rough inside works great to hold the SG in place and the polished black finish on the outside looks great. I think it is just an SG thing you have to live with. Mine doesn't bother me at all. Even my ESP Viper seems to have a heavy neck. Duffy Peace
Dave Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 The Les Pauls will tend to dip toward the floor if you have a slick backed strap, too. I think it's characteristic of lots of guitars, since the body is balanced between the strap buttons and the neck is a cantilevered extra weight. If you look through most of the online catalogs you can find 2 1/2" leather straps with suede backings for under $30. Then, if you have identical straplocks on all you guitars, you can swap off the strap to the one you are currently playing. Personally, I like the strap to be wide from end to end with standard ends. Too many straps nowadays have thin ends.
