stabarah Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 Im also looking at a great amp by fender. Everyone tells me that fender amps are great for my style. I saw some videos on youtube about all the voicings and sounds amazing. It's the "fender super champ XD" from the vintage reissue line. Almost every video on youtube about this amp includes someone playin it with a gibson les paul. Im just wondering if this is the right choice for my epiphone black beauty. Any comments or pointers would be nice -thanks
charlie brown Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 Don't own one (yet, anyway), but have heard a lot of good "press," and reviews of that little amp! If you play "out" at all, and have the budget, I'd also recommend trying out a "Deluxe Reverb!" (22 tube watts) "Twin Reverbs" (85 tube watts) are awesome, as well...but are quite loud at their "sweet spot!" The Hot Rod Series, are great amps, too. I have a "Blues Junior," (15 Tube watts) and the "Hot Rod Deluxe!" (40 tube watts) I play in small clubs, and bars (mostly) and the BJ is plenty (volume wise)!! CB
Dennis G Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 I just picked up a Blues Jr. yesterday, and I'm happy with it. The Super Champ XD gets a lot of good reviews on another forum I frequent, although some have reported problems with the early ones, they seem to have gotten it sorted out. Most of the people that bought them have highly recommended swapping out the speaker and the tubes which (according to them) has greatly improved the sound.
stabarah Posted February 21, 2009 Author Posted February 21, 2009 well its nice to hear the good reviews on it. hey dennis, what's that other forum you frequent? and no ,CB i play in my house mostly and sometimes jam with friends.
taxman Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 Get the Fender you want but I suggest you look at any of the Fender Pricenton amps. I have the Fender Princeton Chorus and I have concluded that it was designed and built by God himself. Whatever you want to play, whatever guitar you plug in (hell, whatever keyboard or vocal mic you plug in) the amp delivers 100% quality. My amp has a billion knobs and buttons on it - Presence, Mid-Boost button, Limiter, everything - so the amp can give you literally any sound you want. When in my Metallica phase I was playing "One" and "Orion" on that thing; flip a few knobs and buttons and I was playing early Elvis rock-a-billy licks. It is unreal what this amp can do. I recently bought the legendary VOX AC30 and I was not initially blown away by it. A guy on a forum said, "Of course you won't be blown away by it, you've been playing a Fender Princeton for 15 years!" So true. That Princeton ruined amplifiers for me. Nothing I buy - even if I buy Hendrix's very own Marshall - will blow me away because I have owned and played a Fender Princeton Chorus for fifteen years.
stabarah Posted February 21, 2009 Author Posted February 21, 2009 nice one, i actually did look at the priceton, but i need an amp that i can carry in one hand and my tank of a les paul in the other. pretty handsome amp if i do say so myself. but the super champ will go great with my les paul, right?
rafaelh Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 nice one' date=' i actually did look at the priceton, but i need an amp that i can carry in one hand [/quote'] You should be able to do that with a Princeton...tube or not. That Chorus is a SS amp so it should be light enough...heck even the Princeton tube amps are light. I mainly play Fender amps so I like them all pretty much. But not all Fenders are created equal, thank God. For me some can be to bright, or to boxy sounding, and so on. Still love them though :) . IMO, as is everything else, but if I was to buy a Fender amp to just keep at home I belive I'd look at one of the Cyber Twins. I know...the big one is as big as a Twin and weights almost as much. They do make the Deluxe which is a smaller version. Anyhow the big one might be out of your price range too, but darn....it would probably be the last amp you'd buy, or need, for your purposes. Definitely almost guarantee you'll have alot more fun with it than any other Fender amp. A friend of mine has the original version and it's a blast to jam through....he's giged out with it also. I've been thinking of getting one myself recently. Pretty pricey new but I've seen them used from 400 to 600 bucks for the older version....cry once I say:) Anyhow just my 2 cents worth and as always just my opinions.
Dennis G Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 well its nice to hear the good reviews on it. hey dennis' date=' what's that other forum you frequent? You don't have to buy the course to join the forum. http://community.legacylearningsystems.com/index.php?err_id=9&route_to=http%3A%2F%2Fcommunity.legacylearningsystems.com%2F
m-theory Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Most of the people that bought them have highly recommended swapping out the speaker and the tubes which (according to them) has greatly improved the sound. This can be said of pretty much all new, mass-produced combos, including the blues jr. Based on what I've heard of this XD, I wouldn't mind having one to dink around with. Seems like a real nice little amp. Nothing I buy - even if I buy Hendrix's very own Marshall - will blow me away because I have owned and played a Fender Princeton Chorus for fifteen years. Down, boy! You're sounding just like someone who's never played through any other amp but that SS Princeton. I used to have one, and, while it wasn't a horrible amp, it wasn't even close to holding a candle to any of my tube amps. It does sound better than SOME tube amps in stock form, but not mine, and definitely not an original plexi.
