Decka
So I was given a 1969 Gibson SG. There is minor wear and a missing pick guard. The problem is that the neck is crack and someone thought it was good idea to sink a screw into the crack of the neck. DO you think it is worth trying to fix or will that cost too much? Aaresz
It is definitely worth your time to take it to a quality luthier and have them check it out. I see no reason why the head could not be repaired, and if needed a wood dowel glued into the screw hole. If you don't want to you could always give it to me! :)
codyyy
Or me, I'm always looking for project Gibsons since I have all the hardware to put another '60s/70s SG together.
Cooperoni
Do some research, find a repair shop in your area and see what they think they can do with it and how much the repair will cost to fix the neck. I would try a few different places so you can get a good assessment of what it is going to take to get it fixed. Then you can have it done locally or even send it off to another luthier not in your area. Most luthiers can't make an accurate assessment until they have the guitar in their hands. There are a few folks on this forum that know, use and recommend a luthier in their area, who doesn't charge as much as the mighty G's repair shop. In San Francisco CA, Gary Brawer Instrument Repair, or Griphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto CA. I go to Gary and have never had any work done at Griphon. I'm sure there is a qualified Luthier in NJ...
Decka
Thank you for your replys. Any recommendations for a luthier in NJ? They seem to be hard to come by. I got this list(http://www.cybozone.com/fg/luthiers.html#nj) but seems to be outdated I think its a 1968 S#513839
lous1952
Read this thread, and send it to Lay's Guitar Shop in Akron, Ohio. You're better off sending it to a well known guy like Dan Shinn at Lay's with a national reputation. He knows what he's doing, and will probably be cheaper than any local yokel "luthier". http://forums.gibson.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=4599 Lay's website: http://www.laysguitar.com/ Anyone can claim to be able to repair a headstock and stick some glue in it. Doing it right and making it look good is another thing altogether. Call Dan, you can't go wrong.
