timandbob Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 My wife is beginning to get interested in learning to play the bass (yay!). It would definitely add value to our band. Anyway, she has small hands and I was thinking about a short scale bass for her. Since she is starting out, we'd like to not spend too much, but I know that we need to get something that isn't crap. So, any ideas? Also, I know that lots of people on this board like Rondo Music and the quality of their instruments. What do you think of the SX SJB-62 Short Scale LPB? Thanks!
RobinTheHood Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 No experience with SX, but how about an Epi EB-0 model. I know they come in short scales. Sorry I cant help more. I bought my Epi EBM basses (nothing like the EB-0 models) many years ago and that was the end of the story for me. Never needed anything else.
floydpink7 Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 If you don't want to get the EB-0 :- ...how about a Squire Bronco? I saw it at my local guitar shop and it looked pretty good! http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-by-Fender-Affinity-Series-Bronco-Bass-Guitar-510426-i1146354.gc
pohatu771 Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 If she's at all interested in a viola-style a la Hofner/McCartney, I recommend paying the extra $50-100 for the Chinese Hofner over the Epiphone model. Last I checked, the Hofner was $350, the Epiphone was $300. The Hofner was lighter, had a better finish, and felt like a better instrument. The Epiphone had a bit of string buzz, but that could be solved with a set up, or a new nut at most.
timandbob Posted March 1, 2009 Author Posted March 1, 2009 Thanks all. We are still looking. Right now we are looking at the SX SJB-62 Short scale and the Ibanez GSRM20 Mikro short scale bass. The problem is that no one in town has either of them that we can play before we buy. Right now we are leaning towards the Ibanez since our local guitar shop, I think, can order one and get one for us to try.
floydpink7 Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 That Ibanez is pretty nice, especially the blue one like the SX.

Guest icantbuyafender Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 the EB-0 is my personal favorite. basically its a EB-3 SG bass minus the bridge mini humbucker why the EB-0? at age 22 im a whopping 5'4" so normal basses just do not feel right. When id record a bass track just to jam over i found myself fighting the jazz bass my friend leant me, and his thunderbird wasnt much easier to play for me. i found both to be heavy and my fingers just werent as quick on them. so i tried the EB-0 and its become my secret weapon for backing tracks. excellent value and a very comfy slim neck made it a winner in my book. ive got thin not so long fingers so the EB-0 just fit like a glove. (pun!) but if you want the fancy pants EB-3 by all means go for it. i just needed a decent bass
timandbob Posted March 5, 2009 Author Posted March 5, 2009 Thanks all. We found a Squier Modified Jazz Bass (maple) on craiglist for $170, so we went for it. As a jazz bass, it has a very thin neck and a 1.5" nut so its as small as it is going to get. Now, to just teach my wife how to play bass. Oh, anyone know an inexpensive practice bass amp that doesn't sound like junk?
floydpink7 Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 I'd recommend a Marshall MB-15 or MB-30. They'll go for about $150, and I've had no problems with my 30 watt. They all have a pretty cool built in "Modern" and "Classic" switch. Besides, they're a Marshall. So you know you're not gonna have any problems. Or at least, that's what most people say .

floydpink7 Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Yeah, those peav(ies?) would definitely be a lot cheaper. I guess the marshalls are more intermediate practice amp, but could definately be played at a small gig, especially the 30 watt.

So I just contacted him and bought it from him directly. Nice little practice amp! So far, I have the Squier Modified Jazz Bass ($170, off of craigslist), the Peavey MicroBase ($60 quasi ebay), and I was able to score a faux (not fender) tweed base case ($50 off craigslist). I think I did pretty good and I am set for a while. Thanks for your help and input.
KaydenCourtright Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 I bought the EB-0, It's Pretty Good. True to being a bit top heavy though, but......... Who cares. Suck it up you whiny little biatches LOL!!
