2) The instrument is incorrectly labeled as an Epiphone Deluxe. It is' date=' in point of fact, a Custom model

3) The seller indicates that the instrument was made in Taiwan. It was made in Japan, at the Matsuko factory according to my research and the available [i']printed [/i]reference books.

IIRC The Custom has block inlays, The DeLuxe trapezoids. I think the first series were made in Taiwan in '79. but they were discontinued in '81, not '82 as seller claims.

Nice looking Epi. I wouldn't mind having one. But not at that price in that condition.

To be fair, the seller does say the guitar has it's fair share of nicks and that the headstock veneer is poorly reglued. Perhaps he conveniently overlooked mentioning the "2" stamped on the headstock, but he didn't try to hide it in the picture.

Epiphone should reissue it.

Right - the Custom I have has blocks and the triple binding, gold hardware, sunburst neck and headstock:

I wish they'd reissue it too. Then I could put this one away for safe keeping...

The Deluxe I have doesn't have trapezoids' date=' it has blocks, same as the Custom. But it has the triple binding, gold hardware, sunburst neck and headstock:

Very nice Brian. But I'm pretty sure that's a Custom you have. The Custom and DeLuxe were visually exactly the same except for the inlays. It makes more sense if you look at their Gibson LP counterparts. Meaning the Custom has block inlays, and DeLuxe trapezoids. Well, by my logic anyway...:-)

That's a gorgeous Genesis you have there, Brian.

It seems to me you posted some pictures recently of a Genesis that you had stripped with a heat gun. Is that the same guitar? If so, are these finished pictures 'before' or 'after'?

Insideman, you have my permission to shoot me dead if I were ever to even think about stripping the one in the photos above. The one I am stripping was a black Standard model that had been butchered and gutted by the previous owner(s). I am trying to bring that one back to it's former glory.

Richochet,

I've collected a lot of photos of Genesis off the web and I have yet to find one that's got more bling than the Custom I posted. I did find a Deluxe with trapezoidal inlays, but it has chrome hardware, black finish, and single ply binding. I still believe the one I got last month is a "true" Custom, and it's binding, hardware and finish are consistent with what both the '09 Guitar Blue Book, and the '09 Vintage Guitar Guide have to say.

Okay, now I'm confused. What is the defining characterstic that determines whether an Epiphone Genesis is a Custom or a Deluxe model?

According to Wikipedia (not always a flawless source, I know) my Epiphone is a Custom: starburst color, single-ply binding on the neck and headstock, chrome hardware and trapezoid inlays.

Wiki says double-ply binding on the body front and rear, but mine looks like single on the rear and triple on the front (white, black, white).

So which is it?

Steve, yours is a Custom. The Deluxe have all gold hardware, and multiple binding around the headstock. Yours looks like a pretty nice example - sunburst Customs in good shape are fairly rare, most were solid black. You also have an original Genesis hard sheel case, most of which have been lost.

Let me know if you ever want to sell it.

hi im from argentina i have a beautyfull Genesis Custom 1979 and i have a question

WHICH PICKUPS were coming whit this guitar!??? i know its a DiMarzio.but i dont know the model.

please if somebody knws please tellme

Hey Fabian, welcome to the forum and the Geni owner's club. Short answer, I don't know what DiMarzio's they used, and it doesn't say on the back.

In those days, there was a lot less to choose from in the pickup world so they were probably just whatever humbucking DiMarzio's were being produced at the time, and may or may not correspond to the current models.

But I'm game to figure it out - I'll dissamble one of mine again and send the photos to corporate and see if they have any comments.

BTW, cool avatar. Post up some high-res pics when you can.

Oh - the original post is over a year old.

If I remember it right, the seller had no bids and then it "sold" for $1,000. I'm guessing they gave themselves the winning bid.

It has not reappeared, and many much better examples have sold for far less or not at all since then.

Cheers, Brian

Personally I think theses guitars are the best kept secret in rock n roll history. I own A 79 genesis standard. I own one back in the 70's when they first came out but lost that one to hard times. The one I have now is just like it and its a beast.. these guitars are the single most under rated instruments in history. I'm a sessions player and this thing in most cases sounds better than anything it goes up against. Especially through some hot American tubes. I think people are finally some 30 odd years later tuning in and realizing this. To me this is a very special instrument. I found my current one on ebay. I got it and of course the action was all wrong.. I took it straight to Jimi Gravity In St. Louis. (Gravity Is the only one that can even think of touching my guitars) He re fretted it with the original fret wire, leveled the frets and strobe tuned. He cleaned the pots and wiring and handed me a screaming monster back. This guitar ripps. post-57728-091549600 1372080416_thumb.jpg
