xdouglasjordanx Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 the original guitar was a lh Epiphone special 2 completely thrashed. i decided at first i wanted to re-finish it.. then i wanted to make it a bit thiner... then i got abit crazy and decided to make it into a half-hollow by hollowing out the top of it. Day One - sanded all the finish off (this took a long time even with a power sander, wide belt and belt sander) - thinned out the body using a wide belt sander - mapped out the design and went to work drilling holes to start choppin this bad boy up. Day Two - i started off the day by clamping my guitar to the edge of a table and readying the saw. - this is definitely not just a flesh wound.. i kind of feel i should keep it tho. - the aftermath = alot more sanding - then i ruffed out my cherry back and glued it on.. with alot of clamps - i ruffed the top, i am putting it on when my back is done - i had some scraps so i made a input cover because the plastic one was not going back on this.
lpfan Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 This is some very cool stuff. Thanks for sharing the pics with us!
carverman Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Interesting project. I've built 3 LP types, 2 inch thick, a neck through 3 " thick half hollow, and neck through double cut 2" half hollow from scratch. If Les Paul could do it back in the early 50s, why not.

Ricochet Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 I'm envisioning a solid carved maple(tigerstripe) top with a single piezo-fitted saddle...
xdouglasjordanx Posted March 9, 2009 Author Posted March 9, 2009 I'm envisioning a solid carved maple(tigerstripe) top with a single piezo-fitted saddle... im thinking bigsby.. and looking at it now i wish i did the tigerstripe.
xdouglasjordanx Posted March 9, 2009 Author Posted March 9, 2009 just found this.... this is a old piv of what it >and i< used to look like.
pohatu771 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 You've inspired me to do something similar, now, from scratch. Just hours after I decided to build a Paul Bigsby-style guitar.
Guest icantbuyafender Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 you are a madman sir! this is straight out rad id never thought out such an idea. making a cap for the front and back after some jigsaw work.... MUCH props to you for the creativity. YOU BETTER PUT UP SOUND BYTES and MORE PICS! if youd want to, they make tune-o-matic bridges with piezos in.... just thought id mention it! and as for the top, are you going to carve a veneer cap for it or leave it flat top? im really looking forward to more updates, friend. this beats the pants off my LP jr build. (just a highoutput pup that can be tapped, and a "vari-tone"-like thing)
xdouglasjordanx Posted March 10, 2009 Author Posted March 10, 2009 day three - neck and back i am liking what i am seeing for the future of this guitar. (also i would like to thanks Ricochet for coming through with the print of the 355 that i am using for the fhole) i go the back done mmmmmm... cherry. i still have to make a control cover neck befores - neck after - i decided to leave some paint on for the look :- this is my favorite picture
Ricochet Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 im thinking bigsby.. and looking at it now i wish i did the tigerstripe. I was thinking this:
mgrmatt Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Thanks for sharing all the great pics ! I like others want to undertake this kind of a project at some point. mgm
IntelligentAl Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 This looks awesome! I can't wait to see the finished product, and I bet it'll sound good too. Good luck!
xdouglasjordanx Posted March 11, 2009 Author Posted March 11, 2009 day 4. so today was the day i have been waiting for! putting the top onto my guitar! but i had to sit on it for awhile.. cause i needed my bridge holes (i knew i could do my pups after but it stumped me. then (with some assitance) i did this i made dowels shoved a nail in them and cut off the top so i had a point sticking up. then aligned the top up (put a piece of scrap wood on top) and hit it with a hammer.. it put holes in it and then i drilled them out... then glued and clamped. then i went to work fixing my neck i then procedded to cut the p-up holes and then started on my f- hole template.
lpfan Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I enjoy woodwork alot but I have never tried anything of this skill level before but you are making me feel very ambitious! This is very cool. I couldn't quite tell how you filled the headstock. Did you use some kind of filler or is that actually a wood dowel of some sort pressed in? It looks really good so far!
carverman Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 thats crazy man. do you build your own necks? Yes. My homemade guitars are neck through design with one piece of wood serving as neck and tone block. Looking at your picks, I see you filled what appears to be the original headstock tuner holes with dowels. What is the reason for that?
antwhi2001 Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Brilliant job so far. I love it when someone takes an under-valued model and makes something special out of it. Good luck with the rest of it.
RSDx Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Cool project - wish I had the skills....and motivation. Lookin' good !!!
JohnMcClane5000 Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Hi, cool project... But in my opinion I'd choose a smaller (Tele-like, Rickenbacker-Rose-Morris-ish) F-hole, but that's only my taste... JM
fenrirlupus Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 what the hell? strange idea, but if it suits you, go for it :P i wanna see this thing when it's done.
