taxman Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 Two tuners on my Lennon EJ-160 are rattling like mad. I just got off the phone with the good folks at Gibson and they are sending me replacements. But I'm just thinking, if I have to remove two of these suckers, maybe now is a good time to replace them all with some quality tuners and ones that match the look of the Gibson J-160. Anyone know what are the ones most swap out on this guitar?
clarkuss Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 **From the Gibson John Lennon J-160 Peace Features Nickel Gotoh Pearloid Keystone Button Tuners Gibson’s John Lennon J-160E Peace features Gotoh’s pearloid keystone button tuners. With a gear ratio of 15:1, these nickel Gotoh tuners deliver precision tuning in a durable housing that provides maximum protection for the gear and string post. All moving parts are cut for exact meshing, eliminating the possibility of slippage, with a special lubricant inside the gear box for smooth and accurate tuning stability.

I once had buzzing from one of the tuners on my USA Sheraton. Turned out it was just a loose washer under the nut on the tuning post.

What really is odd and a bit scary is that TWO of them went at the same time. I have the guitar in a case to humidify it, took her out for the first time in a week or so and DAMN, what is that noise? How two tuners can turn to noise machines from a lttle humidifier in the case is beyond me.
taxman Posted May 26, 2009 Author Posted May 26, 2009 Not that anyone cares, but here's an update on noisy tuners. Gibson is incredible when it comes to replacing parts. I call them, tell them what I need, and two days later they are in my mailbox. They are so good I feel I could call them and tell them I need an entire '57 Les Paul Goldtop and they would send it to me. Replaced the two noisy tuners...and then another one started making the noise. As I was monkeying with that one I realized it isn't the guts of the tuners that are rattling, but simply the plastic peg. It somehow loosened. A quick drop of crazk glue down the shaft into the head and problem was solved.

Had the same problem with my AJ45s when I first bought it and it rattled. The warranty repair was it came back with new Gibson Keystones instead, rattle gone since. My EJ160E I bought the Gibson Keystone set, but you have to route the holes bigger for the bushing to seat. Just be aware on the Gibson set the length is not the same as the Epiphone set so you will have less room to wind the string but they work fine if you do go that route.
taxman Posted May 30, 2009 Author Posted May 30, 2009 Thanks. If I go the new tuner route, those look sweet. I hope those require little modification.
