Phase One, Complete.

So I recently picked up a Peavey Valveking here on the local CL. I really like the simple all tube path and I like the fact that I almost instantly got the tone that I've been trying to squeeze out of my Marshall all these years. but i think it would sound a lot better with two 12's. thus my project commenced.

I pulled the chassis out and built a box for it, to make it a separate head. I was pretty pleased with the outcome, though I don't think I'll use the same vinyl for the cab. I'll probably use Tolex. I was having trouble with a seam for the edges of the vinyl and then I came up with this idea after a few beers (when I work best).

Next I will build a 2x12 cab to house two Eminence speakers. Then I'll have my home cab and jam session cab.

All in all I'm really pleased so far.

Sweet rig, face. I love Marshalls...but they are usually a one trick pony...a really good one trick though. Bet that Valve King and Kat have a lot of versatility! That an Epi SG on the side?

Man; that is a nice looking head. I've been pleased with the ValveKings that I have played. Gonna move this thread to the amp section where I'm sure it will garner alot of interest.

Looks great! Love the color and overall look!

What model Marshall was it that wasn't blowing your hair back? I think everything up to the mid-70's was as good as an amp can get, the JCM800 is extremely good, but the JCM900, DSL, TSL, and all of the SS's pretty much trash, as far as I'm concerned.

True, the plexi's aren't the most versatile amps around, but they do an overdriven tone better than anything else, imo, and have outstanding clean tones as well. What more does a guy need?

The Marshall is an older Valvestate 100 watt. The solid state back half wasn't doing it for me, and over the past couple of years I've been cleaning up my tone and the Marshall was falling short there, too.

This Valveking does it for me though. And i like that its only 50 watts- I can hit the sweet spot at a lower volume. I played a lot of Fender amps when I was first learning electric like the Blues Jr. and a Hot Rod Deville so I was wanting to go back that direction. I bought this amp on a whim and afterwards realized that it had the same tubes and setup as those Fenders... without the price tag. I'm going to swap out the tubes eventually but I need to build the 2x12 first.

Thanks for the interest! My wife even likes it, so hopefully she'll be on board for future projects like this.=P~

I don't blame you at all. I can't stand those myself. The dictionary has a photo of those amps alongside the word "harsh."

50 watts is a hella loud amp. I've never gigged my BF Bassman without an attenuator, and I've played some fairly large stages with it. If yours has got a master volume though, you can choke it back without an external device, and if you don't overuse the pre-gain, you can get pretty decent tones from a MV-equipped amp.

A buddy of mine picked up a very clean 30 watt Delta blues Peavey w/2x10's, for fricking $60, at a local pawn shop. Not a bad catch. Not my bag o' tea, personally, but he gets very decent sounds out of it. I wouldn't mind having one at that price, for use as a rehearsal amp.

yep, thats my budget rocker. G310, 50's LP wiring w/ P.I.O. caps, GFS Crunchy PAF neck and GFS Power Rails bridge. The bridge is a surprisingly versatile pup if you use the volume knob. they sent it to me by accident- I was supposed to get the Fat Paf and they let me keep both. In the end, I like this one better.
