Semi Hollow Strap Button placement...

DJB08

Recommended Posts

So I figure that most folks with a DOT, Sheraton, Casino etc etc...have the strap button at the base of the neck, right in the middle.

Does anyone have there's at a different location?

Say the back of the top left horn?

(Imagine your holding your guitar, pull it away from you. look at the top horn. from it's middle point on the left. go in maybe 2 inches? 2.5?) How about there?

I don't know that i fancy it on the side of the horn...

Provide the different looks if you can find it..

Reason is i'm not entirely comfy with the strap at the bottom of the neck but, it's not really bad.

And I don't want to go drillin' neccesarily...

Dig it?

Thanks

David

For all my guitars I usually install Dunlop dual-design strap locks, but for my sheraton I found it protrudes far too much for my liking when I play the upper frets. Is that part of the problem?

My birthday is later this week and I'm hoping to get a strap like this which comes with its own screws and bushings. The ends sort of semi-permanently attach to the guitar. I'm hoping that cures my relatively minor strap woes.

I haven't picked up strap locks yet. And yes, they would definitely be in the way there...

It's just a matter of it hanging sort of oddly for me with it at the necks base. that's all.

Hi DJB08' date='

I think it's the only place (at the base of the neck) where it's possible.

There's no massive wood in the horns to fix a screw in.

If there were, I think the guit would hang to much at the right side and it wouldn't be good to play IMO

I tend to agree,it's there because of wood thickness and it balances well there. If you didn't want to use straplocks AllParts makes an oversized button that doesn't hang out any farther than a regular button.

I use straplocks on all my guitars except my Dot, for just that reason. Solved the problem by using the Grolsch washers.

The strap button on 335 style guitar is usually located  behind the neckand certainly to me  tilts the  guitar forwards.

I changed my strap button  ( I like the  OVAL shape rather than a lock  ) to the horn, same sort of position as on a Strat ...

To me personally I find it hangs better. and feels more comfortable ).

I carefully put a black plastic ( hole filler type plug the kind you fit  in kitchen units etc to cover unsightly holes .....

its held in place with a bit of blue tack , so someone can replace it back there IF I EVER SELL THE GUITAR..)

maybe one  reason why alot of people don't see difference is because they play sitting down ....ie bedoom guitarists.. whereby they tilt the guitar they way they want and rest it on their knee...

but certainly I noticed if standing up playing my Epiphone it  just didn't hang right  /not quite comfortable when playing standing up .

if it was a £20k gibson Gretsh.  ???  but then would it worry me.. haha

Most gretsch have the strap pin in that position already. I honestly don't notice much difference between the two locations though when going between my sheratons and gretschs.

Be careful with it in your new position though, I'm 99% certain you will only be screwed into the ply, with about 5mm of weak 'wood' between your strap button and disaster.

Listen to Matt...

I don't want to be an alarmist, but honestly, would not leave this where you now installed it.  It's going to pop out eventually.

There is nothing there to secure that strap in that position on those guitars other than the side wall of the body.  Eventually that's going to rip out, and you do not want that to happen

I agree- not a good area to place a strap button without some way of re-enforcing the area. However I do agree that the location it is in (on the neck) makes the guitar tilt forward and makes it difficult (at least for me) to play. Gibson informed me  that they could move the position, but with shipping, insurance, and other fees it would be fairly expensive. By the way I am talking about the Epiphone ES339 pro. I do the love the sound of the guitar but find it a lot more difficult to play standing than my Stratocaster.

if I shorten the strap on my Sheraton, it kind of helps.
