dh82c Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Hi, This is my Epi Les Paul. Guitar Dater say it is a Samick made from 92 (which is very close to when I bought it. I worked in the store I bought it from so it was new stock as well unless the suppliers had in in stock for a while.. but I digress). Anyway.. read somewhere (other forum.. cant find it now) That these were Basswood bodies with alder tops and maple veneer for the flame. I have opened the guitar and can clearly see that it is a 1/8" maple veneer (no surprise) but didnt know about the alder-basswood part. Can anyone confirm or deny? Not a bad little guitar once the pickups were changed out and a decent nut added. Just curious. Thanks Drew
Dave Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 1/8" veneer is pretty thick for an Epi. My chinese flametop looks to be more like 1/16" Samick has a pretty good name for quality and yours looks mighty fine. I went to a Greg Bennett (former Gibson/CMI exec) guitar clinic and he had a row of Samick guitars with him on display and played pretty much all of them in his fingerpicking clinic. Afterwards, we all got a chance to look them over and were impressed. He works for Samick now and explained that about 80% of guitars in shops these days that aren't name brands made in the USA are built by Samick. I wouldn't be afraid to buy anything they make. I've played some Samick acoustics and was really impressed by the out of the box action and setup.
dh82c Posted April 2, 2009 Author Posted April 2, 2009 Pretty certain I measured an 1/8 but now that I think of it.. that includes the finish which is laid on pretty thick. I remember when I bought mine comparing it to a buddy's LP Studio and mine was lighter and more resonant.. so maybe it is basswood? No one seems to know :)
dh82c Posted April 3, 2009 Author Posted April 3, 2009 I changed the subject.. maybe I was too subtle I my LP is pretty light and resonant.. is that because it is not mahogany but rather basswood or am I just lucky I am certain the catalogue said it was mahogany but... you know how catalogues are.
