great amp isnt it? i miss mine...

but to fair, i'm not sure it was the marshall for me. definitely nails the Bluesbreaker and Hendrix tones though. i wasnt ever able to crank her to ten, but at lower levels i could never tweak it right to get a nice thick overdrive a la zeppelin. perhaps if i had had more time with her....*sigh* the one who got away.

enjoy!!!

Yep, I need to really spend time with her and find all the tones. The funny thing is I played around for about 3 hours on it can came upon a setup I like. Then went to the VM forum to look at their sticky regarding settings. The one mine is really close to is the one Steve D. (guy who designed the VM) posted for Slash. Now I am not a Slash fan but it was funny how close my settings where to his. Most where spot on while a couple where off by :30 in o'clock settings.

Congrats! If I was going to buy a new Marshall head, it'd probably be that one. I like that it's a single channel with a switchable gain stage; I find that channel switching for two (or more) discreet channels is a pain in the *** as you now have a lot of different tone controls to deal with. With my current setup, I'm using just one channel anyway and then boosting that same channel with the same settings with a couple of different pedals. Truth be told, I'd probably buy an old 2204 or 2203 head and that would do it for me, but why screw around with a bunch of stomp boxes if the 2266 already has boost built into it?

dang man' date=' I just looked it up. That isn't cheap head![/quote']

You know, these days that's about what I expect to pay for a good amp sans speakers. My Mesa head was $1600 when I bought 5 or 6 years ago and right now I'm drooling over a nice Victoria combo which lists for $2700:

After I get a few bills paid off, I might just pull the trigger and go for it.

RichCI,

I used to have a JMP 2204 20+ years ago. This is one reason why I picked the 2266 over the other marshall heads. Single channel, just your basic Marshall sound. One thing to remember with the VM, switching from Low Dynamic to High Dynamic is a big increase in volume. More than one would use for a solo boost. I find I can get a great crunch sound in the High Dynamic Range with the pre-amps at moderate level. The Detail pre-amp is where the distortion comes into play and I never have it above 2:00. I found where the detail really started to distort, backed it off and got a really good crunch sound out if it. Then use a MXR distortion plus when needed. This setting and then the volume/tone knob to fine tune things.

Sounds like you're doing the same thing as what I'm doing with my Mesa head, Tom. That's a bit troublesome that the volume increases as much as it does; I keep my amp set to where it's on the verge of breaking up and use boost pedals as needed. There is a bit of an increase in volume, but it's not way over the top; a bit more of a volume change than I'd like, but not out of hand.
