I had recently purchased Dunlop strap-locks but the screw was to wide and I did not want to drill a hole into my guitar. Your assistance is appreciated. I only have one guitar that I used the included screws, but I don't know which one it is. If the screw-head is too big for the button (as I've heard most Gibsons are), you can file it down fairly easily. The original screw will fit better than the replacement. Thank you Jude www.judehernandez.com Don't be intimidated by the Dunlop Screw. It is well worth the few extra turns. An electric/power unit will have the screw in there in no time. It is the best holding unit there is. I have a set of Schallers that I constantly have to keep tightening the screw to the body, even after the 'toothpick mod'....it only holds for so long. I've got Dunlops on all of my solid body guitars, but the strap lock on the neck would just stick out too far on my Dot. The Grolsh washers are just as secure, if not more so, than the real thing. wedgeSG Posted May 14, 2009 Share Posted May 14, 2009 I like the Schallers due to the small size and lack of play in the connection. I use 'em on everything I've got and love the fact that you can even get 'em in nickel. Stew-Mac sells them by the component too: so if you need buttons for six guitars and alternate a single strap it's do-able without having to purchase any more hardware than you need. The screws are of a small diameter but on all my Epi's I've simply filed down the edge of the stock strap pin screw head- until it dropped into, and seated in the Schaller button. They just seem to be of a higher quality construction compared to most others I've seen. Haven't tried them yet, but there's a new brand out, (ZEPPLIN I think), that looks to be Schaller inspired that might be pretty good. In some cases (if you want chrome, anyway) it's cheaper to buy the Fender-branded strap locks, but they're still Schallers. I think they're on sale now, though, so the Fenders aren't cheaper. No messing with glue, screws, etc. and completely harmless to guitar. So more or less there are 100% free (if someone else drinks the beer which is how I got them) that doesn't make you mess with your guitar. No-brainer for a broke college student like me. Yeah you might have to pass a drill into the already existing hole; usually to make it deeper as the Shaller screws are a little longer. I put them on all my guitars. I also tried to use the Epi screw, with no luck. Didn't want to have to grind or file it down to fit inside the Shaller button. Once they're on, they're great. I would recommend starting with the lowest cost, less complicated methods (the Grolsch washers or plastic "keeper" styles) and settle on whatever suits your playing style and comfort. Grant Posted May 15, 2009 Share Posted May 15, 2009 When I wanted straplocks for my Epi Ultra I took the stock screw to GC and the screw that comes with their Proline straplock was the same length and diameter so I didn't need to file heads or redrill screw holes. I don't know if the screws are the same on the Casino and LP but odds are they are. You can see them at the GC site. I would not try to force an oversized screw into your screwholes with or without a power tool as breaking the screw will not be an easy fix. I know that there are two separate components, the button and the component that goes on the strap. But does one thread into the other, or clip or what?
