Bender 4 Life Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Evidently they're NOT discontinued.........got it from GC online. Came with posters, owners manual, brochures, even a lead cable & truss rod allen wrench. The details..... it's Chinese, but the fit and finish are suprisingly GOOD. The P-90's had to be height adjusted after doing a setup, and they sound GREAT! They put out a mighty interesting range of tones, & the neck p'up truly sings. The electronics all work correctly, nothing loose, nothing cracked, and no visible blemishes......... EXCEPT, the fretboard is the worst looking specimen I've ever seen, no rough spots or sharp edges over the binding(which is well done) just the color is awful, truly 2-tone....... when I change strings this weekend i'm going to warm it, to open the grain, and try a little stain to even it out. My only other complaint is that 1 of the tuners is quite crooked, but i'll fix that when I swap tuners for some "creamkeys". All in all, its average for a guitar in this price range.........but the tone is above average, even with junky Chinese stock strings on it. Pics will come this weekend........otherwise it never happened <wink>.
Vox50 Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 What profile could you describe the neck as being ? Looking forward to the pic's.
jcwillow777 Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Congrats on the new GT! Yeah, I don't know what all the bru-ha-ha was about the GTs being discontinued. I think that would be a mistake for Epi. They still have them listen on their home page. Maybe just a little scare to shot up sales. Enjoy her and put up lots of pics, LOTS! The neck on my GT is very comfortable, and I have short, fat fingers. I think it is about 1 5/8" inches wide at the nut and about 20-21 mm thick at the first fret. Very easy playing for me.
EpiEric Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 If you select the Les Paul 1956 Gold Top in the list on epiphone.com you'll still see DISCONTINUED in red above the picture of the guitar. I think that Guitar Center/MF just bought up the remaining stock. Once they are gone, I do believe they'll be gone.
Swoop Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Congratulations mate, now hurry up with those pics! You know better than that! You must post pics whenever you get a new guitar, especially a GoldTop! Hopefully I too will soon be joining the GoldTop club. I have discovered one for sale or a reasonable price, and am just waiting for some pictures before I can seal the deal. It doesn't have P90s but I can always put some HB sized P90s in if I want. It has Bill Lawrence pickups in it at the moment which I'm told are very good, and I've even had someone offer to buy them off me if I happen to get this guitar and want to change the pups.
midiman56 Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Congrats, Bender! Goldtop LP's are a thing of beauty ... and hopefully, a joy forever! JIm
Bender 4 Life Posted May 23, 2009 Author Posted May 23, 2009 oooooooooo K................It's my 1st day(night) off work since the GT arrived. I spoke a bit prematurely about the "surprisingly good quality" of the Chinese guitar. Over the past few days & playing sessions, I've noticed some things that must be addressed, & todays the day! I'm arming myself for battle, and my necessary weapons are: Small handtool kit, bits& driver, allen wrenches,n/n pliers, tape measure, etc. Straight edge, long finetooth file, small ultrafine grit whetstone. Yarn, precision woodstain pen, clean soft rag. Pencil, new strings, electronic tuner, speedwinder. Detailed instructions on,and experience with everything I want to do. And most importantly, patience & a "can do" attitude. I'll snap several pics and upload them as promised when it's done.

Those are some pretty d*mn good p'ups.......I have a set in my old GLP. I also finished the setup today, and only needed about half the tools I mentioned earlier....... I adjusted the "bow" out of the neck, corrected the saddle adjustments, and set the action to my likings......New regular .10 Slinkys, and WOW, this MoFo sounds SWEEEEEEET.
lpfan Posted May 23, 2009 Posted May 23, 2009 Congrats! I hope to get my GT out of layaway on Friday. And the GT's are discontinued. I sent an e-mail to Musicians Friend customer service dept. and they told me that there was enough stock to supply them until I think it was August or some time close to that. Once the stock sells out. Its gone, no mas. So congrats and hopefully next week I will be joining the GT owners club too.
