weird static

OK.

I've always said that any static or buzzing noise from a guitar is caused by poor grounding.

Here's a weird one.

The only time I get any static noise is when my fingers brush against the pickguard.

There is no noise otherwise. I play the guitar and it is dead quiet at all times.

There is no static noise if my hand touches a pickup, or the strings, just when my fingers brush the pickguard.

I'm thinking it's static built up in the pickguard passing to the pickups throught the mounting screws.

Any ideas? Other than removing the pickguard? :-)

This came up a while back but I don't remember the results. But if you Google pickguard static, there are a lot of entries; perhaps an answer lies there.

I get the same thing with my S/S/S strats. Both of them, but not with my humbucker guitars.

I always figured (and from what I've read) that it was bad shielding and/or a ground loop.

I'm pretty sure that it is static build up, though. It seems to only happen after I've been playing for a few minutes.

Also, I've noticed it mainly over the winter when everything is very dry.

Plastic is a great material for building up a static charge. The problem arises when the current is discharged, making that scratchy sound. I've had some success in the past with Teles, attaching a grounding wire under the pickguard to bleed off the charge...

One thing I haven't tried is spraying the pickguard with some kind of anti-static laundry product.

Do you have any artificial limbs or metal plates in your head? ;)

LOL. I don't have any metal.......

What was the question?

I've had this happen to a couple of my guitars. I have used a bounce sheet as mentioned and I also have some spray for static in clothing. It works great for me. I plan on shielding the PG on my Tele for other reasons, but this seems to happen every few months on my Tele, so hopefully that will kill two birds with one stone.

This is on my Ultra 2. I've shielded my Fenders, and have no problem with them.

I'll try the bounce sheet, or some anti static spray.
