Casino: Sunburst or Cherry? Pics please!

Recommended Posts

Went to the guitar store today. I was going to buy a Hummingbird acoustic, but they recently increased the price on them. They were on sale for $499NZ, but according to the manager for pricing, who I've been in contact with by email, that was a bit of a blunder, as it's not much more than what they buy them in for, so they put the price up accordingly. And with the prices on all the Epiphone electrics coming down I couldn't justify it.

All was not lost however. They finally had some Epiphone Dots in stock, a nice Cherry one, and the Worn Brown Dot studio. I was contemplating the Cherry one. The grain really was gorgeous, and it was finished well. Although the finish did overlap the binding a little around the neck joint and cutaways. And, as I already new from playing one before, it didn't sound greatly different to a Les Paul to me. Those too things, plus the unwillingness of the store to give me a good deal really broke it for me.

However, I'm now pretty set on buying a Casino. I just love playing clean stuff lately, and of course the Casino with those P90s and the full hollow body, gives me the resonance of an acoustic, and a beautiful, jangly clean tone. I just can't decide what finish to go for. I loved that Cherry Dot, but I already have a Cherry SG. I love Sunburst equally though, but I already have a burst strat. I don't really want black. I guess natural is a possibility, but not high on my list. So really it comes down to Cherry and Burst.

Can anyone post pics of their Casinos in these finishes, so I can make a decision? I'm kind of leaning towards Burst at the moment. The store is offering 0% finance at the moment, so I may just lay down the few hundred bucks on it from selling my Les Paul, and pay the rest off.

Cheers fellas.

This really isn't making it much easier. I think I might go with the 'Burst though. I have two red guitars, so the 'Burst Casino will even things up a bit alongside my 'Burst Strat. Plus it just looks so good! Now to negotiate a deal with a case!

The VS version of the burst (Vintage Sunburst) really is quite nice. I'll just sit and stare at mine sometimes.

My Casino is great unplugged but it still isn't an acoustic guitar.....great for practice but otherwise not enough volume to be considered an acoustic. I have the "burst" which looks beautiful as the grain is very evident.

I'm about to place my order now. Sunburst it is.

Digger, I realise it's not voluminous enough to truly be an acoustic, but it is like an acoustic in the way it is hollow and resonant, which contributes to that clean tone.

I have a John Lennon sunburst and the grain is just outstanding, many of my friends who are into woodworking remark about the beautiful grain.I also have a natural Casino and the grain really stands out,I don't think the cherry shows much if any grain.I wish I was a bit more computer savy,I'd show you how bold and beautiful a grain can stand out but I don't have a clue about uploading pictures...sorry.

I've placed my order for one Epiphone Casino in Vinatge Sunburst and got them to include a case. It should be in my local store sometime in the not too distant future, perhaps Monday. But I can shoot in and take care of the paperwork for the finance over the weekend, then when the guitar arrives, all I have to do is waltz in, take it off them and be on my merry way!

I'll post some pics when it arrives, and when I've played it.

I second that opinion. I love my Cherry Casino but there's something that is more aesthetically pleasing to the eye with a Sunburst Casino.

I'm gassing for a IBJL Casino in Sunburst.

I don't own a Casino yet (notice I said yet, but someday I most certainly will), but I have personally always been a sucker for the vintage look of the sunburst, with the natural running a close second. I love seeing all of these pics. 8-[ They always look so much nicer and are better representations of the specimen than the ones on the store sites like MF.

Edit: BTW, love your sig o8jedi!

Oh yes, I am glad I went with Sunburst. Though I do love Cherry on a 335 style guitar, that colour, that grain, the cream binding, those curves, and those F holes are a beautifully harmonious combination. Perhaps I will own a Cherry Dot some day just because it's such a gorgeous combination of aesthetic elements.

Probably heading over to the store tomorrow to fill out the paperwork for the finance on the Casino. Not sure if the the guitar will be there or not, it has to come in from another store. If not, it'll arrive a day or two after, and the guys will give me a call to let me know I can pick it up. I will of course inspect it before I hand over any cash and take it home, just to be sure it's up to scratch. I'm sure it will be though. I'm quite looking forward to it!
