Sjael
Steel wool?
Guest
The silver Bigsbys aren't super-duper shiny to begin with. Mine certainly doesn't outshine anything else on the guitar. Just stick a silver one on, you'll be okay, your pickups will probably outshine the trem if my Wildkat is anything to go by.

Ricochet
Generally the gold wears of by giving it a good stare. If you want to speed up the process, a good soak in oven-cleaner might work. Never tried it with gold myself tho.
lpdeluxe
The body of the Bigsby is polished aluminum. It should be easy to give it a satin finish with steel wool. In this pic of my SG you can easily see the difference between the chrome (pickup covers and Bigsby handle) and the main Bigsby casting.
MaxHart85231281734137
so if i use oven cleaner on it will it just strip the gold totally off and leave like bare steel under neath or will it just tarnish it?
Ron G
Oven cleaner is harmful to aluminum.
Ricochet
Unfortunately I don't know any household chemical that will eat away gold and won't touch alu, but Ron makes a good point. Obviously doing this sort of thing, you don't want to leave it unattended. Observe the process, and as soon you see it desolve the gold, remove the part, rinse and take off any gold remnants with some steelwool.
