Dot & Dot studio question

I am a bit confused. I am looking for a used dot or dot studio, So I am checking Ebay. I was a little taken back by the price of used Dot's. I see Studio's go for 250 and Dot's go for about 300. I say to myself. Dot Studio's go for 299 new and Dot's go for 399 new, Scratching me head at this point, Cause If I walk into a store and ask for that price I can get a new one.

So the question what is it with there resale price?, they sell at a higher resale vs new price than Sheraton's. I have one of those already That is why I am looking at dot's.

Do they really retain there value that much?

From what I've seen, the majority of used prices being asked are way high. I often see the same ads in Craigslist run over and over again because no one bought. Occasionally, the ad will pop up with a lower price, but not much lower.

As for Dots, I saw a nice one (not a 2nd or refurb) recently on Eugene Craigslist for $175, including hard case. That's a good price.

I would agree 175 with a hard case is a fair price.

i think the deal is that people really like there dots and dont necesarlly wana get ride of them, I had to sell mine to get my riv, now I want a dot again!, but I bought mine for 350 new from my local GC becuase it was a floor model in black nothing was wrong at all with it, I had it for about 3 years, i but it on craigslist for several months with the bastards offering me and telling me I wouldnt get more then 150 for it....pishha I would keep it for that price, but eventually some one got it from me for 325! not that bad of a hit on my part, I think every one starts out High in there price, just try to work em down with some old fashioned haggeling, Now I to need to search for a cheap dot

I guess for me since I have the Guitar Blue Book, Good or bad, I go by there prices for what one should go for.

If people really like them and don't want to sell them, They shouldn't put them up for sale. I know about selling one thing to help finance another, I had to do that to get my Sheraton. But I buy used guiatars like I buy used cars because walking out the door you take a hit on value, It sucks but it is what it is.

I am glad you got a good deal and were able to sell it for that price, Honestly for me I am thinking I might as well haggle on a new one since I can get a new one for the price of a used one. So the cycle of frustation continues.

I've got big red and I can't get anyone to buy her.

I don't think 400.00 is too much at all for this dot studio.

and if I can't get that, I'll keep it.

It's extensively modified and has hardshell case.

It sounds and plays and looks fantastic.

If you shop cheap, you'll have to be careful. They aren't all the same.

But in general the mistake I see here is this..

A used sheraton or any higher priced guitar will depreciate a little more..for a number of reasons.

first, most probably is that people who want a higher priced guitar don't always want used.

Second, a person who bought a lower priced guitar is more likely to want to get his money back as much as possible.

Third, the ratio of depreciation isn't really the same.

If I knock 200.00 off my sheri since it's used, I sure as hell aint gonna knock 200.00 off my dot because it's used.

If you want a low priced guitar, you have to be careful about what you're getting.. maybe look at Rondo they have SX and Douglas and Agile

guitars that all get good reviews.

But yep. You can find guitars way low priced that are still nice.. it's a question of time and effort and luck.

Twangster 007,

This is what the '09 Vintage Guitar Price Guide shows them worth:

Dot (ES-335 Dot) '00-'07 In excellent condition, LOW: $275. HIGH: $325.

Dot Studio '04-'07 In excellent condition, LOW: $225. HIGH: $250.

This seems to me a little high, but, a + for Dot owners. Personally, I'd rather see them a little high, rather than a little low. Still, regardless of price, the seller still has to find a buyer. I believe I sold TWANG my Dot Studio, with case for $200. It had GFS Pick-Ups and some hardware mods done. I believe I got a fair price for it.

The $175. that Ron stated, is a steal!!..... Keep L@@king.

Best, Faded...

I agree the price is high, however if someone want's to pay that, oh well.

They're smart enough to use a computer to find goods on EBAY, they ought to be able to compare the price of new ones to see if it's a deal or not.

As long as the ad is truthful about what you're buying I'm good with trying to get top dollar.

I'm not paying it because like the rest of you, I'm smart enough to check prices else where before I buy.

Faded I thought it was 225.00 but no matter, it was even with shipping as I recall!

So thanks again!

It was a good deal on a really nice guitar.

Pushing your mods up a notch was well worth it for tone and playability,

though some have not liked my choice of guard material!

And I agree.. what condition the guitar is in, and the overall idea of not shopping just for price should mean they retain their value.

Look .. we all want our guitars to retain as much value as they can.. until we go to buy one!

Ah, yin and yang.. ya can't avoid it!

I got nothing against bottom feeders. *S* I do a little scouring and scrounging myself.

I'm a lot more concerned with folks that lie about stuff and rip someone off than I am even about getting

the very best deal in the world every time for myself.

That's the answer, once you play one you can't bear the thought of parting with her. I just put my Black Studio away as usual she blew everything else away that I played tonight.

quite honestly, the $200 I spent on my brown dot studio was the best 200 I could have spent. its a tone machine. I'm still debating mimicking twang's big red style mods... the extra tone and and volume controls.... oh if I could do it w/ out worrying I may mess it up, I totally would have done it by now.

200 on a dot studio I would throw down in a minute. Although they just droped the price for one by me.. 249.. I am seriously thinking about it.

All it takes is patience.

I got my 97 MIK Dot off e-bay for $290 + 35 shipping including hard case.

I feel that was a great price. Hardly used at all. A solid 10.

I got my Peerless 96 Casino from a pawnshop in Vegas through e-bay.

Contacted the seller and he ended the auction and sold for $495 including shipping and hardshell.

9.5 out of 10

My 06 MIK Riviera, with the minis and plastic still on pickguard and pickups, through e-bay, again contacted the seller, he wanted $475 plus 35 shipping including hardshell. A solid 10.

Sold. I had just lost an auction where my high bid was $650. (By waiting I saved over 150)

By watching and waiting, and hitting the confirm bid at the right time, you can get a great deal.

Don't let the GAS attack rush your buy.

You know what you want, it will come up.

All it takes is patience.
