newlife15
Hello All, not sure if anyone has encountered this problem i am having but just other day i was holding my guitar and i banged on the strings with the palm of my hand to stop it from dropping off my lap and when i went to strum my strings were all out of whack the action was lowwwww and buzzing. so i started trying to adjust the action but i don't have any tools and i read somewhere that we could use business cards under the 12th fret to make an action adjustment. anyone heard this before? thanks Newlife
AS90
You only need a flat head screw driver to adjust the saddles and bridge screws, how hard did you smack it!? I cant really see how you could disturb the bridge much it should be solid. I hope you havn't hit it hard and damaged the truss rod! Google guitar setup guide. newlife15
its the bridge that i twist up or down to lower/raise the action. i didn't smack it hard enough for the bridge to even budge.....

Ron G
Maybe knocked the strings off the saddles?
vomer
If the strings are on the saddles & nut, you might have taken a little slack out of the neck-truss rod relationship. If I'm straightening a neck, I give it a push to make sure the wood has "followed" the truss rod, like you did, albeit with a bit more care :-). With normal string tension, try loosening the truss rod a little, anticlockwise, an eighth of a turn. Hold the guitar in the playing position, fret the top E at the first and seventeenth frets and see if you can see a tiny gap between the string and the seventh fret. If you can't, do another eighth of a turn. If you are confident you can feel the response of a material to your pressure, hold the neck from the front at say the seventeenth fret and give a GENTLE push from behind at say the second fret. If you are a ham fisted gorilla with the sensitivity of a well, gorilla, don't do this! +1 what AS90 said about googling set up guides for more info, and you will find stuff like setting that gap under the 7th fret with feeler guages. If you are unsure about any of this ask us or a tech. While these kinds of adjustments can be simple once learned, take it easy on that Elitist! Good luck.
