Guest icantbuyafender Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 I just pulled the trigger on a Big Muff w/ tone wicker. (same as a usa muff but with a treble boost and tone mod) All because Ive always wanted one, and i was at the shop toying around with an English Muff'n tube distortion. Let me say, WOW. My LP classic's burstbuckers are cranking tones ala Mr. Page. My 490R/T's in my LP std are diggin it, as well as my trusty Goldie's minis. The wilshire and SG's 490/498 combo seriously give Angus Young a good tribute with this pedal. This has already become a permanant pre-amp for all my amplifiers now. Especially my ValveJr. and my blackheart killer ant that do not feature any sort of EQ. I had to buy that english muff'n right then and there. I couldnt get a bad sound out of it. My amps are loving the additional (2) 12Ay7's being added. Im thinking of swapping the first 12ay7 with a 12ax7 for added grit. Even stock, this pedal is about the most versatile thing on the earth. Best $145 ever. (got it marked down from $190) Im in saturation heaven. My stereo rig (blackheart giant 5 and epi ValveJr) have never had this much front end crunch. Ive got big hopes for the legendary big muff. Especially since its english cousin won me over, and this one i ordered has the same original circuit plus an added boost and tone cut. What is your current FAVORITE pedal?
byron Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 I agree about the EH muff pedals. Between a friend and I, we have all the versions of the Muff pedals and love them all. My favorite distortion of EH is currently the Metal Muff. its awesomely crunchy, bright and full sounding , and doesnt need a compressor, like some other distortions when connected in a long chain, and also very versatile. You will see from my profile that i have a lot of distortions, I love them. I had a bunch more but sold them all. Word of advice, avoid Danelectro cool cat pedals. especially the distortions. they suck when connected in a big chain. But the Danelectro Fab Metal is one of the greatest little distortions and its only 20 bucks. Also try the Deltalab Metal Pedal, that is another very good pedal and it was only 30 bucks at Guitar Center. It has a versatile sound that goes from an overdrive to a decent fuzz distortion. If you turn down to output level to about a 7 out of 10, you get a great full blown fuzz pedal, but when you crank the out put, you get a slightly cleaner metal distortion. I use this most of the time for some reason. Byron
Swoop Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 I'm quite interested in getting a Big Muff, but I'd really like to try one out with my gear first, before I go lay a couple hundred bucks on buying one, which is a bit difficult since I don't know anyone who owns one. I really don't have much use for pedals, but I'm interested to find out how a Muff would sound with my Casino, to see if I can get some Beatles Revolution type fuzz. Not to mention, a heap of my favourite musicians use the Big Muff. Might just have to buy one off ebay. I can get a new one landed for $120NZ, which isn't much of an investment, and if I don't like it, I can sell it again anyway.
Hungrycat Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 I apologize for that last post. It's late, I'm tired, and things that are funny late at night aren't usually funny in the day time. Signing off....now.
midiman56 Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 We understand, Hungry ... The Hypnotoad made you do it! Jim
Hector Arcadius Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Congrats on the new buy man! I know the feeling of this ''pedal honeymoon period''! I'm a pedal freak myself, not to what I own but to what I search around and would like to own. I have heard some killer samples of the Big Muff-Wicker and it seems to be by far the most versatile and dynamic of the Muff series (although I cannot really understand why EHX keeps using the ''Muff'' term on all of their overdrives / distortions / fuzzes, since there are some completely irrelevant to others...). Since you ask about pedals, I could not play without my MI Audio Crunch Box nowadays! it turns my little 30-watt solid state amp to a fire-breathing monster! Everything from sizzling blues, 70's classic rock, 80's hard rock & metal. Just use the nobes available and the guitar volume and that'a all you need! For X-Mas. I'm seriously GAS-ing for an overdrive pedal. Most probably, CMATMODS has my full attention now! torn between the Signa Drive and the Butah. Any feedback (pun intended...!) on any of the above, would be highly appreciated, by anyone who has tried them...
RSDx Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 What is your current FAVORITE pedal? Not really an "effects" pedal' date=' per se, but my $30 Danelectro Fish and Chips eq pedal does wonders for my VJrs, especially the head/cab. HOLY MOLY !!!!! It's a great affordable 7 band eq, easily worth the $$$. Just what Epis lil 5 watters need I used to have a Big Muff back in the '70's .... was lot of fun - great noise !!!
jcwillow777 Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Congrats on your new pedal. I love my pedals. My favorite are my modded TS-9s. Plural because I have 4. I bought some mod info from Brian Wampler and did them myself. I did change the chip to an IC OP2604AP which was not in the instructions, but wow, what a difference. I am no longer looking for any overdrive pedals.
Bender 4 Life Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Sometimes I feel like the "old man of the mountain" because the only pedal/effect i've ever used is the channel change pedal supplied w/my amp, and/or a Morley "A-B/A...A-A/B" pedal for multiple guitar or (usually) multiple amp/speaker cab usage. When I was playing classic rock & "hair" metal.......I used a 105w reverb amp..... Now that I'm playing Blues & "New Country", all I need is a good tube amp, & my Blackstar sure fits the bill. I considered getting a noise gate a while back, to fight microphonic "string ring"feedback, but realized that i'd get the same effect by simply lowering my p'ups a bit.......it worked perfectly.
mud guy Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Not a pedal guy, can get most of the sounds I want from my amp (2 channel with 12AX7s and EL34s plus accutronics reverb)...I do however have a Boss RC2 loop station which is fantastic for practice. As someone once told me "The guitar equivalent of a blowup doll".
RSDx Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 ...I do however have a Boss RC2 loop station which is fantastic for practice. As someone once told me "The guitar equivalent of a blowup doll". LOL !!!! I have one of those as well .... fun lil pedal, but it never has made it out of the house....yet
vomer Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Huh' date=' huh, huh.... you said "muff".....[laugh'] I laughed. [biggrin] Please don't apologise for bad jokes. It only gives my wife ammunition.
Strumbone Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I've never owned or used effects, and prefer just a cable between guitar and a decent valve amp. However, I do miss the reverb from my Super Reverb back in the sixties. Spring reverb tanks were all we had back then, as there were no digital modelers/emulators. These spring reverbs now are kind of pricey, but recently I came across a DIY pedal that looks promising: DIY "spring" reverb kit
Caramello Koala Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 My favourite pedals are my USA Big Muff, and my Vox V847 Wah.
peeper Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 I just built an Ibanez 808 clone. Modded it out, two clipping options, socketed the IC for easy swaps, I haven't even tried it with my JRC4558 yet and guess what? It is the shiznit and far outshines my TS9. I am seriously considering branching out and building these and selling them. But if I'm gonna do that I guess I need to do more than 808's. What else would ya'll as guitarists wish you had on your pedalboard?
