SoCalRat
The springs in the reverb tank broke off in my socal. Seeing as how i don't use it I read that I can just take it out and unplug the rca cables and problem solved. But what I don't know is do I need to remove the reverb Tubes as well? And has anyone done this with out problems or damage? Thanks, SCR
twanger
Not sure but I think if you unplug the RCAs it won't pass signal through the rest of the amp. Check it and see...unplug the RCAs and then turn on your amp and plug in your gitfiddle ...If you get sound - GREAT! If not you will need to replace the reverb tank. You can get accutronics tanks at Mojo: http://www.mojotone.com/ and probably cost about $40.00 +/- a few bucks. Definitely check the RCAs first. On my BC30 which is a similar circuit design to the SoCal if one of the RCAs is unplugged the amp will not pass signal. Don't remember which one. If you're amp still functions even with the bad reverb why not just leave it plugged in?
SoCalRat
Thanks I'll plug er in and see what happens. I don't want to just leave it in cuz it's noisy as all get out. you can hear the springs rattling around whenever it's moved. When I'm wheeling it in to a gig on my cab you can hear me coming from down the block. That and I'm thinking about adding an fx loop in it's place. -SCR
SoCalRat
Removing the Tank works just fine[biggrin] . I just orderd a set of jjel34's for this amp, can anyone tell me if I need to adjust the bias or is it like my old Peavy:-# that didn't need adjusting when replacing tubes? twanger
Good deal! The circuit of the BC30 is so similar to the SoCal so I wonder why unplugging my verb basically cut off all signal flow to the output? Here's a link to THE BC30 mod thread: http://forums.epiphone.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=6812 On the first 2 pages is some helpful info about EL34s The rest of the thread may give you some more useful ideas. As an added note it's been a while since I've tinkered with the amp. It seems that all the tubes and circuits are playing nice and the sound really lives up to the name of Blues Custom. I will state that I did go back to the 6L6 tubes because I like the extra power/headroom but I do want to try out the 5881s and the 6V6s. I also ordered a new toy! the Jet city Amplification 20 watt head. I checked one out banjo shack before the holidays and was duly impressed with the tones I was getting through a 2x12 Egnater cab. It should be here next week. I'm going to build a 2x12 for it that will also double as an ext. cab for my other combos. I selected the Emi Cannabis Rex speakers. It's funny, I ordered those from American Musical Supply along with a mic stand and another Shure 57. They shipped the mic, stand and one speaker from their east coast warehouse which arrived today and the other speaker is coming from their west coast warehouse! Glad shipping was free! :)
SoCalRat
I jammed on a jet city a couple weeks ago. I was checking out this bluegrass jam and a harp player was using one. I asked him about it and he doubles as a gtrman so he plugged his casino in and let me rip it up. NICE little toy i',m jealous!!! Let me know how the Cannabis Rex speakers do, I've been looking to re-speaker my cab and those are some of the speakers I've been looking at. Thanks for the link I'm gunna check it out now!
