We have 6,677 registered forum members and have had 5,389 visits to this thread. Pickguard removed and lost long ago. Original case. Stamped SEC on the back. Upgraded the tuners to gold Grovers a couple years ago. itslikegood Posted November 27, 2011 Share Posted November 27, 2011 I picked up a natural finish Sheraton with the "Epiphone by Gibson" inlay a few months ago. The man who sold it to me removed the serial number sticker, as he thought it was tacky. He also thought the guitar was a newer late 90's model, but when I saw the headstock inlay, i knew it was an older model. The guitar is incredibly clean, almost no fret-wear and it plays very nice. I recently played a newer epiphone casino and i couldn't believe the difference in playability. Since I dont have an S/N, can anyone tell by the photos which year this guitar may have been built? RaSTuS Posted December 18, 2011 Share Posted December 18, 2011 Hi. New to forum here. I have an Epiphone by Gibson Sheraton II,s/n #880910072, with the headstock like the one pictured in post #323. I bought mine new for 380.00 when it first hit the local music store. I bought it to replace a Fender Coronado II w/ Gibson pups, and a jumbo fret neck rework, as well coil tap and phase sewitch mods to the pickups. The Fender was stolen at a job I played, and I was looking for something to replace it. The first thing I bought was actually a Heritage H170, which I still have. A friend of mine spotted the Sheraton,and I bought it right away. I never plugged it in until I got oot home, and I was a bit disappointed with the original pickups. I kept the Sheraton as it was for several years until I was playng with a band where I was using it for a Main guitar as opposed to a Back up.I needed a 335 type sound. I found tthat although the bridge picup was close enough to what worked, the bridge pick up was a bit weak. I then took it to a friend's shop and had the pickups swapped out for a pair of Seymour Duncan Hot Rod pickups. It's been perfect since. We installed them with push/pul pots for coil tapping and phase switching. I play it through a Blackface Princeton,and mic it.( The best of both worlds! ) I guess you can count me as one of the actual owners of the E by G Sheratons.I'm not too sure how to decode the serial #, but I think mine is an '88. I was looking if I could find a replacement pickguard for my "Epi by Gibson "Sheraton II when I landed on this nice forum. My natural beauty was given to me by my younger brother, He told me if I could get her back "alive" She was mine. So I changed the pu's with Gibson PU en gave her a new set of grovers and pots. The only thing here in Belgium ,I can't find is a replacement pickguard. I already asked some dealers if they could find one for me but is seems that Gibson (Epiphone) has no longer spare pickguards for Sheratons. Probably I will have to look for a custom made one. The hump on the front is missing and the back hump isn't large enough to cover the shade of the old pickguard. I ordered a piece of pickguard and will try to make one by myself. It is in what must have been the original case as it fits like they were made to be together! I got mine in a great story...I was working with my Father doing home remodeling in the late 90's, I had been playing guitar for about 3-4 years. While I was emptying out a gentleman's closet we were about to demo, I came across a hardshell guitar case. Curiosity got to me so I asked the homeowner what was in the case. His reply was "That was my guitar I owned in College, haven't taken it out of that closet in at least 10 years...I think its an Epiphone or a Gibson." I asked if I could open it up to see it and he replied "If you take $300 off the job you can take it with you!" I opened the case and there she was staring back at me! I looked at my dad and just gave him a look of "Ummm, could you float me $300?" He turned to the gentleman without saying a word and said "Deal", then turned to me and said "Happy Birthday". I had to work the rest of the day with that case sitting in the corner looking at me, begging to be cleaned and played. I have thought about selling it at least a dozen times when I "needed" other gear...but never could actually pull the trigger, so shes still with me. I also am proud to own a 1988 Sheraton I bought new in Kodiak, Alaska August of 1988. Will post pictures soon. I have always loved this Guitar everything is original including hard case. Serial number 880805381, August 1988. It is in very nice condition other than the pickup covers are becoming tarnished. The man I got it from inherited it back in 1991 from his father who passed away. It's been in the case under his bed since then. Looks brand new and still has the plastic little tuner covers on back, the original warranty card and the Serial number all intact. Guitar is stunning and plays like a dream. The old man I got it from posted it on craigslist at about 11:00 pm one night and I was the lucky guy that saw it and called immediately. I said, I know it's late but I'd really like to buy this guitar. He said I was free to come get it so I did. It was everything he stated and more! Far More! I had it appraised and people across the internet truly have know real idea on the values of these guitars. Ive seen people without any real knowledge say these are worth oh about $400 or $500 dollars. About what a used China made Sheraton sells for! Funny thing is they are worth far more than that. They are some of the best built Sheratons made. They are very RARE and the guitar price guide doesn't even have them in it. If you have an 1986-1988 Sheraton with this headstock you have one of the truly collectable Epi's from the 80's. Two sold in the last couple years that were not original and had dents and abuse. both brought over $1400 US dollars. Mine was valued at double that amount. Sure, I know I'd have to find a buyer willing to pay that but it is what it is. They are far more valuable than what most people think.
