Stig
OK, so I'm finally thinking about doing some upgrades on my Casino. One question that I've had a hard time finding a good answer for is this: What is the hole size in the MIC peghead, and what is the best replacement tuner to use? I'd like to keep it under $50 or so for this job, so I don't want to buy $120 Klusons. Maybe a Wilkinson or similar. And what the heck happened? Last time I bought tuners, good ones (Schallers) were like $40!
Casino4Life
I am having Grover Rotomatics put on my MIK Casino, and I have heard nothing but the best on them, that is one possibility you can go with or Gotohs? I think the Grovers run $65 the Gotoths are cheaper Good luck Brandon
Swoop
The Casino has a vintage style tuner as stock with metal oval buttons, and a press in bushing. The hole size is 9mm. So more modern tuners like Grover Rotomatics etc will require you to ream the peg hole in order to fit them. I'm not sure what style of tuner you want, whether you want the same vintage oval style, or whether you'd be open to a Kluson style with the plastic tulip button. Wilkinsons are indeed excellent, especially for the money. Here's a link to a seller on Ebay who sells Wilkinson stuff very cheap. I bought some Kluson style tuners off this guy for my Les Paul, as have other forum goers, and they're superb. Smooth, precise, stable, and I believe they'll be a direct replacement for the stock Casino tuners, as will the oval buttoned ones. Doesn't appear to have any plastic buttoned Klusons at the moment unfortunately. http://instruments.shop.ebay.com/Musical-Instruments-/619/i.html?Brand=Wilkinson&_catref=1&_dmpt=Guitar_Accessories&_fln=1&_ipg=&_ssn=mmtgenterprises&_ssov=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282
mamm7215
Aren't these supposed to be straight drop-in swap-out no modding necessary? Part #SD9005MN From here: http://www.kluson.com/PRODUCTS.htm $60.00 a set for direct originals...not bad...the 65 Casino didn't have an E stamped on the tuner I don't think...I'll be doing this upgrade to my IBJL when I get the cash... Stig
Thanks, kids. I'll check those out. The major thing I wondered was that 9mm thing. I don't want to ream out the holes. I just want a drop-in replacement where I can leave the original bushings in. Swoop: Do the screw holes on those Wilkinsons match up?
Swoop
Stig, I believe so. The Klusons definitely lined up with the old Grover screw hole on my Les Paul. It was then a simple matter of drilling the second hole at the top and fitting the screw. Piece of cake. But I do believe the oval buttoned Wilkinsons will be a direct replacement for the stock Epi ones. You can probably even use the original bushings and screws. Don't quote me on that though, but if it doesn't work out, at least you won't have spent zillions. Probably find another use for them.
