new pickups on my SG Prophecy

I just put 2 Rockfield SWC pickups in my SG Prophecy EX. Trashed the crappy EMG's for something with real tone. I didnt realize how much the EMG's sucked until I listened thru headhphones. No matter what i played through, it didnt sound good. and all my other guitars sounded great thru the same setups.

SWC's are awesome pickups, lots of excellent clear, bright tones, rich harmonics and either clean or distorted, they ring through bright and clear. They sound like Gibson 57 classic pickups played through a BBE Sonic Maximizer, thats the best way to describe them. They are very bright and "in your face" sounding pickups, yet I have a push pull tone pot and 500k volume pot and in single coil mode, they sound like the best Strat you have ever heard. There are literally no weak spots or bad points about these picukps at all. They look awesome on the all black guitar, with black rings and black and creme colored p/ups.

I cant recommend these enough, this is the second guitar I have used SWC's on. my other is an Epi LP Ultra II, with a SWC in the bridge and a Dimarzio Super II in the neck. There is no way to describe the tones that combination gives, its the most versatile guitar I have ever played. And I've played and owned lots of guitars over the years. I dont see a way to add a picture here, so if I can figure out a way to add one to my profile, you can find it there. ok, I think i figured it out.

cheers

Byron

Can I ask why you bought the EX if you didn't like EMG pups? Did you play the guitar before you bought it? They are not for everybody but they do exactly what they were designed to do. They hold up a clear brightness under the heavyist of distortion and have tremendous sustain for Heavy Rock or metal unleashing great pounding rythymn and tremendous leads. I know of some gibby players who have bought $1500 guitars and replaced the 496R/500T pups with Emg's. They didn't think the Gibson pups wre raunchy and articulate enough. So I have to disagree that they suck they just don't suit everyone's style or preferences of playing. Maybe you should have went with the GX which has a greater range of tonal possiblilties with the Dirty Fingers split coil pups. IMO

Gotta go with Rewd on this one ... EMG's don't suck ... they just do what they do!

I've always said that you could nail EMG's to a hockey stick, string 'er up and she'd sound just like any other EMG-equipped axe. That being said, if you are playing metal ... and metal only ... they are just about the best choice out there for that hard edge sound.

I don't question your choice in the guitar or the pup change, Byron. You liked the look and I'm glad you found a way to get sound you wanted out of her! Now go bang it around!

I agree with Jim, I didn't mean that you made a bad purchase I love My Prophecy SG's I think they are made of great quality and are the most player friendly guitars I own. I was mainly curious about your statement and had no intentions on being Rewd! If you are happy with replacing the pups that's all that counts. You have to play it not anyone else.

I've been thinking about the Rockfield SWC's for a new project guitar.

I'm one step closer to ordering them now.

Where did you get yours?

I've been looking at Musicians Friend and it seems like they only have the neck pickup in gold.

Is there someone else who carries them?
