Pie
Standard Casino: $600 IBJL 1965 Casinso: $1000 I've gone over the specs and I don't see that big of a difference between the two.. Black Washer Can deal without it Pickups I hear the two models have different pickups but the chart says they're both P-90s Neck size I recall reading that the Standard's neck is fatter. Don't know if that's true. Neck Joint All I know is the standard is possibly not set at the 16th fret which might make a big difference sound wise? Case Can deal without it Wood differences Don't have much of an opinion China They're both made there
Hungrycat
USA pickups and electronics for the IBJL. Same old foreign made stuff for the Standard.
charlie brown
Go, play one of each, and then you'll know for sure. Sometimes, it's more than a cost difference. CB
Pie
Nobody within a 100 miles of here keeps Casinos in stock. You have to order the guitar and put down a $100 deposit so I can't compare them. So the Standard's pickups are foreign made P-90s and the IBJL are American made P-90s? Hungrycat
So the Standard's pickups are foreign made P-90s while the IBJL are American made P-90s? I believe so...
charlie brown
Well, I've played both, side by side, and the IBJL's are much nicer, both in fit and finish, and sound. But, that's only IMHO. And yes, the IBJL Casino has all American parts, electronics, hardware and pickups. CB
Pie
Brian did a nice comparison on Casinos........ http://forums.epiphone.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=11079 Peter That's the chart I'm using to compare the two. I just don't see a huge difference.
Vic Flick
Standard Casino: $600 IBJL 1965 Casinso: $1000 I've gone over the specs and I don't see that big of a difference between the two.. The Gibson USA pickups & case are almost worth the difference alone. Forget the Lennon association' date=' what you are getting is a Casino made to the same specs as the vintage ones. A Standard Casino doesn't feel like a [i']real[/i] Casino, the neck is way different, the construction of the body is different, they don't resonate the same. And if they don't resonate the same, they won't sound the same. The 5 ply maple / Birch will sound a whole lot different than the 3 ply maple. Deeper, warmer, more resonant. Closer to the vintage Casinos. And that will translate to the electrified sound. Pickups I hear the two models have different pickups but the chart says they're both P-90s Seymour Duncans and the pickups on a Jay Turser are both humbuckers. Does that make them equal??? Wood differences Don't have much of an opinion Well you should before leaping to conclusions. As I posted above, it's not just the wood but more importantly the construction. 5 thinner plies will resonate different than 3 thicker plies. Thanks jerrymac. That's the kind of comparison I needed. I want the real deal. I'm going for the IBJL.
vulture
I recently bought a Standard MIC at GC. Played it against an "inspired". I liked the thinner finish on the "inspired". Sound & playability were very close IMHO. [/img]
smips65
Thanks jerrymac. That's the kind of comparison I needed. I want the real deal. I'm going for the IBJL. Good call. As life would have it... You'd get the $600.00 standard, have an oppurtunity to play the Inspired, and feel like you now have to sell the standard to get the Inspired. A trap many have fallen into. cookieman15061
Ok here's the deal and its just my opinion but I have owned 3 casinos and...... 1. Sunburst Strd with bigs- Beautiful guitar but just was never quite right sound wise. Before giving up on it I decided to go the distance and change everything. New tuners, switch, jack, pots, wiring, nut etc. All top quality stuff and cost me almost $400. Now she plays as good as she looks. 2.Natural standard - Again same thing nice looking although not a fan of the thick poly but sound wise everything felt and sounded like crap. I bought it cause I wanted a natural casino like John's but this wasn't what I was hoping for. As time went on I played it less and less and was about to put the extra cash into her and replace everything like the sunburst but...... 3. IBJL casino- I heard about this baby coming out and figured I'd check it out before I did anything to the std. I read some initial reviews, check out the specs and realized this was more the look I wanted and if it came with gibson USA guts and the gold Grovers and case. Well thats enough positives for me. The IBJL is twice the guitar my standard was(sold it) in everyway. Feels like a thousand dollar guitar. Plays like a thousand dollar guitar and sounds like one too. If I was still a gigging musician I would go for the elitest but for my purposes ( playing for churches, occasional gigs and parties) the IBJL is perfect. mgrasso
Cookieman, were you able to try one out in Pittsburgh? Who carried one? Hollowood? Pittsburgh Guitars? I don't think GC's in the area carry them. Mark
Wiz-ski
+1 on the 5 ply body vs 3 ply body - the IBJL feels and resonates SO much better than the standard. That alone was worth the price of admission for me - sold the MIK and got the IBJL. The finish on the IBJL is light years ahead of the standard as well. Nevermind where the pickups are made - to me, the MIK's pickups were always a little too hot - the USA Gibby pickups are juuuuuuuust right. cookieman15061
Hey Mark, fact is I never did get to play one begged a couple stores to order one in so I could check it out but they wouldn't budge unless i was gonna buy it. So screw em I ordered it myself after talking online with some guys that had them. Took a chance I know but i'm so very glad I did! The compliments I get as far as the sound goes has been pretty amazing. The 5 ply body and gibson pups make an quite a difference in tone plus the p90 hum is greatly reduced. I can't recommend it highly enough.
