Which Epiphone Les Paul Model

Welcome to the forum, cfox!

I'll just toss the Les Paul Ultra into the list of suggestions. It has become my main, go-to guitar and gigs with me five nights a week. It's biggest feature is that it is chambered, so it is substantially lighter than your standard LP ... something to consider if you are going to be playing it standing for any amount of time.

The other guys are right though ... you have to play and play and play as many as you can get your hands on. I am a firm believer that your next guitar will PICK YOU! Have fun shopping, and don't forget the pics!

Play about 20 of them and pick the one that sounds the best acoustically - play them unplugged.

You will probably want to change the pickups and hardware anyway.

I agree with playing several before deciding, but play them thru YOUR amp, or 1 like yours, and you might find 1 (or more) that sound fine stock.

My '56 Gold Top & my Standard Plus are both stock, and sound really good thru my amp.

Theres nothing wrong with modding them, lots of people say it's half the fun of owning an Epi. but it's definitely not a requirement.

I suppose a major question is: what's your budget? Will make a

bit of a difference regarding which guitar.

Regarding modding, yep, it's half the fun as Bender says. I had the

EXACT SAME pickups in both my epi LPs - In the Studio, they were

bottom-heavy sound-wise, kinda leaning torward that "muddy" sound

folks speak of. But in the LP CLassic, they sounded JUST FINE. Different

wood construction. I slapped in Gibby pups on both due to excellent

purchase price on each set, and to "return" to the sound of the Gibbys I

owned in the past. Personal choice, as MOST EPI pups sound just fine

right out of the box.....
