cnsky54
Foolishly, I went to the local music shop to try out guitars on a day off! I had been listening to a lot of old CDs by The Who and wanted to thump on an SG for a bit to see how it felt. It was a weekday morning, no-one in the store, and I retired to a teaching room to try instruments. I had a chance to try out the limited edition 1959 reissue hanging behind the counter as well and compare it to other LPs on the wall. Lots of time, no rush, able to go back and forth and sample thoroughly. And who was the lucky winner who came home that day? The envelope please.... The faded cherry Ultra! I thought it played and felt better than the 1959, the SG, or the other guitars there. And it sounds better to me as well. I was expecting to fall for the 1959, but it just didn't do it. It's nice that the Ultra isn't quite so heavy, but the fit and finish was perfect, I love the satin neck, and it made the sounds I like. So, it doesn't really matter where it was made, or how it stands in the relative list of guitar pecking order, when it's right, it's right. Someone else will want the 1959, I'm sure. Now I have TWO Epis on the rack, unless the G1275 already counts as two? And there is still that nice Casino hanging there, waiting for some more OT shifts at work.... AlanH
Glad you picked out a nice LP. Did the thicker, more rounded profile of the back of the neck put you off the 1959? Surely the burstbuckers sounded sweet. I'm GASing for the LP tribute, myself. Did you try one of those out? Alan
cnsky54
No, the neck on the '59 was just fine. I don't know exactly what it was, but the Ultra just felt 'better' for me. Totally subjective. The '59 was a great guitar, no doubt, but the Ultra fit better. And sounded better to my ears. Who will ever be able to analyze why one guitar says 'buy me!'? Never got to try a Tribute, sorry!
midiman56
I have to agree with you, cnsky. My Ultra has been my go-to, workhorse, do-everything guitar since I bought it. Congrats and happy playing! Jim
