Introduction and my Casino Photos

Hi all...

New Epiphone owner here. While my Epi is not new, I am new to hollow and semi hollow body playing. I am mostly an acoustic player having played mine for over 30 years, but over the last couple years I have been getting into fooling around with some electric guitar. I have had some success trading guitars on Craigslist as I try to find what type of sound I like best. I have a nice little Blonde Fender Blues Jr to play through and was enjoying playing my Partscaster Strat and recently aquired Ibanez AS73. I couldn't get over how much nicer playing a hollow body seemed to feel over the strat. Well I put my Strat on Craigslist looking for a trade and lo and behold, I got an offer to trade for a 1996 Casino with an original factory installed Epiphone Tremoverb!!! I have been wanting to try out a P90 equipped guitar and I do love the Beatles.... Needless to say I emailed right back and got an address. I went there, he loved my old Strat and I loved the Casino. So I made the trade and brought home my new Casino last night. She needed a bit of cleaning up and will need new strings very soon. But I find her to be beautiful! Love the tone.

I am posting a couple photos but would also appreciate any input on favorite type of strings you guys like on a P90 equipped Casino? I have been putting D'Adderio 11's on my Ibanez Semi Hollow and they sound really fat and sweet. I don't play Jazz so flatwounds are probably not for me I guess. For what it is worth, I will be playing mostly Blues and classic rock type stuff through my Blues Jr.

Here is my new Epiphone Casino VT-NA (1996 built at Peerless plant Korea)

Nice looking Casino.

I like nickel wound strings on mine. They seem to be bright enough for rock and still able to be mellow enough when you need it.

Personally, I think the Casino and it's cousin the ES-330 are two of the most under-appreciated guitars in the Epi-Gibson lineup.

I put a black pickguard and witch hat knobs on my Casino and I like that look. I think it draws the eyes more to the wood and less to the pg/knobs.

Enjoy your new axe!!!

Welcome. Nice guitar!

Also' date=' how do you like the Ibanez? I tried one of those before I bought my Epiphone Dot. It seemed like a quality guitar.

The Ibanez is what got me into hollow and semi-hollow guitars. It has really nice overall quality of finishing (mabe even a bit better than the Casino) and I have kept it all stock. The pickups are Ibanez ACH1 and ACH2 pickups which are supposed to be PAF like in tone. Never having played real PAF pickups, I can't say, but I do like them.

Nickel is what I will likely use. That is what I have on my Ibanez right now too. I am assuming it is OK to put 11 gauge strings on a Casino? That is what I always kept on my old Strat and have on my AS73 as well.

Your guitars are beautiful by the way! I like the Black pickguard look. I need to see more without a pickguard to see if I like that look better.

I'm not going to post that I put 10-46 D'Addario Half Rounds strings in my Casino because that is always my response to a Casino strings question and they haven't sent me any free string sets.

Half round guitar strings are round wound with 430 stainless steel, then precision ground, leaving the outer surface semi-smooth. They retain the flexibility and tonal characteristics of round wound strings, but provide a smoother feel.

Hey TP' date=' welcome to forum! (What's TP stand for BTW?)

A partscaster for a Casino with a Bigs? I think you made out on that trade. That figuring on the back is to die for.

Stick around...

Thanks... TP actually stands for "Taylor Player" which is my moniker over at the Gibson forum. I have been an acoustic player for over 30 years and only started my forray into the world of electrics a couple years ago. Since that time I have done quite a bit of trading as I tried to find what worked best for me and decided that semi and hollow bodies are most intersting and fun to play. I also really wanted P90's... Strats are fun and my partscaster was a luthier built mahogany body hardtail with Texas Specials for pickups. I have had a few strats including an Eric Clapton Signature and an American Standard and that partscaster was my favorite. All in all it was a good trade I think. The new owner is an older gentleman who wanted to play blues on a Strat and mine could do that in spades! I do agree though, I did make out pretty well, but I have no intention of getting rid of this Casino at all. It's way too fun.

I can't play much on electric as I have been mostly a fingerstyle acoustic player, but I am learing. I have the blues pentatonic down pat and can jam on my Boss loop station through my Fender Blues Jr. for hours with that! #-o

As to the Half Rounds Bluelake... tell me more about them. I have heard of them but don't have any experiance with them. I tend to preferr at least 11 gauge strings on my electric guitars. Also, I am new to a Bigsby style trem. Does that affect the overall tension of the string for bending and such? Would the D'Addario Half Rounds produce a good blusey tone? I am going to Guitar Center tomorrow to get some strings and would appreciate any comments on what would work well with my setup on the Casino.

Thanks for the welcome guys.....

Any trem will make the tension while bending feel different. You also generally have to bend farther to achieve the same range in your vibrato. As you bend the string, you increase the tension on the trem spring and make the whole trem go a little flat.

And I play nothing under 11's and those are on my floyd rose equipped guitars. Mostly its 12's and 13's for me. As long as you set the guitar up for it you'll have no problems.

I definately like the black better. I took off my white pickguard last night and put it away for safe keeping. I like the look better without. Today I am off to find new strings. After a bit more research, I am going to try the D'Adderio EXL115W with the wound G string. They are 11's which I like and having a wound G might be kind of interesting. If it works I will have to try them on my Ibanez AS73 semi-hollow as well.

Any idea where to get a new toggle switch tip? I am going to check at the Guitar Center by my office, but I have a feeling my switch is metric and even if I can find a Gibson one, it won't thread on right. Any suggestions?
