hellopain
hey guys! i'm new to this forum and recently bought an '06 Casino (MIK). just a couple of questions.. the f-holes were painted black (and a sloppy one at that - even smudged over the top) that really annoyed the heck out of me! what was epiphone thinking? they could've just left it natural or put real binding on it. anyway, i had them stripped, but you can still see some black stuff in there: and, after a luthier suggested i change the tuners and tune-o-matic i've been looking hard at gotoh parts. are they any good? any recommendations? thanks guys! Fantana
I replaced my bridge with a schaller unit which looks and sounds awesome but the gotoh bridges are highly recommended by people on here. I decided to keep the original tuners on mine, they still work perfectly, I just made sure that my nut was cut correctly to elimate binding and slipping. And the f-holes on my Dot are carelessly painted black, must be a NA colour thing
hellopain
thanks fantana! i think i'll be getting the gotoh parts as suggested by my luthier. i think i'll also have the f-holes binded. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bridges,_tailpieces/Electric_guitar,_Tune-o-matic_bridges/Gotoh_Tune-o-matic_Bridge_with_Standard_Posts.html http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guitar,_solid_peghead_tuners/Gotoh_Tuners/Gotoh_Vintage-style_Oval_Knob_Tuners.html am i looking at the right parts there? brianh
You might also consider gold Grover tuners like the John Lennon Revolution Casinos... http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Epiphone-Revolution-Casino-Electric-Guitar?sku=518553 Gotohs are OK tho.... Notes_Norton
The wood grain on your Casino is awesome - not many are that nice. It's a keeper for sure. My MIK (2001 Peerless) Casino has Grover Tuners, US pots and switch, Duncan P90s, Black PG and Witch Hat Knobs. Plugged in it sounds a little better than the Kalamazoo Gibson ES-330 HNGD Insights and incites by Notes
TP
Your post made me go check my 1996 Peerless built Casino.... There is no colored area where typically you would find binding around the F holes. It is just natural wood and you can see the laminations. I had actually thought about taking a black sharpie and coloring it, but thought better of it and I figure I will just leave it natural. My Ibanez AS73 (Korean built) has a beautiful binding around the F holes that are matching to the body and neck binding. While the Ibanez has a beautiful build quality, I can't seem to put the Casino and those screaming P90's down! (I love the wood grain on my Casino too!) [img']http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd219/lofapco/100_0406.jpg[/img] nice casino TP! love the epi "bigsby" on it! i'm actually taking it to my luthier today to have the f-holes binded because there's still some (unremovable) traces of black paint on it and it kind of bothers me to be honest. so i hope binding it will hide that "flaw" i had an ibanez artcore before and the f-holes were rightfully binded as well. too bad i had to let the guitar go due to financial reasons. thanks for the reply guys! i'll take pics after she gets home from the shop.. edit: here was my ibanez

Anthony_JB
I wouldn't worry too much about the black paint on it. They all come like that. I know my did and I think it looks alright. Though, some look better than others and others will just look like crap, but I guess that's just how production varies overseas.

In the late 60`s and throughout the 70`s Gibson used a light Grey paint instead, which I think look`s better.
mamm7215
I think the f-holes look better unpainted on the naturals, my sunburst casino has the black trim, but it's done well and I prefer it painted on the sb.

Garret The black painting is often done to hide the plywood edges. I had the same issue with my Gibson made '66 Epi Triumph. I ended up gluing binding inside the f-holes to make it look a bit classier and it was a lot of work, but looked great when it was finished. Stew-Mac have the abs binding,(.020) and you would probably need only a 4ft length of it...but gluing it on may be a bit of a problem because the thickness of the top and the width of the binding will be different. That means that you would have to trim any excess carefully from the top with a one sided razor blade..like the kind they use for scraping paint. The glue (Weld-ON #16) used to glue plastic to wood, is also sold by Stew-Mac..
Notes_Norton
My Gibson has unpainted F holes, my Epi has painted F holes but they did a good job painting them. I really don't have a preference. Notes

PP_CS336
update: my casino with the f-hole bindings: i'm a very happy man! now it sounds AND looks good! Hellopain' date=' now that looks like the binding on the f-holes of the Sheraton-II (they come that way and cost less than the Casino go figure). Anyway, it looks sharp now. I wouldn't bash Epiphone for the black paint job they did originally. I had a Gibson ES-335 back in the 80's and they didn't do such a hot job on that with the black paint. It seems to be a hit or miss thing. Most of the time your never notice it when you're buying the guitar because you're checking out the sound and other things. Then once you buy it and bring it home, it's like, "I never noticed this before."
