Wiring Help

Recommended Posts

I have had my 1st attempt at rewiring and I am very pleased with the results, however, I do have one problem, when the toggle is in the middle possition, both pups are active but the volumes are not indipendant of each other. its almost as if they're acting like a master volume for both pups.

so in short, it doesnt matter which volume you turn up or down, it effects both pups, what have i done wrong? [crying]

everything else works really well,

any help is greatly appreciated,

-Chris.

Chris,,the way it works is that when the toggle is in the middle, both p_ups

are tied together by virtue of the two middle contacts on the three way and

from there it goes to the jack. Yes, so in that position, any volume will

have an effect on both. If you select neck or bridge, then there is some

independence, but of course you won't hear the other p_up.

It's the Gibson style of wiring and configuration via the three way switch.

There are other types of wiring styles..but hey..Gretsch uses pretty much

the same thing with their master volume.

sorry, but I dont think that I was as clear as I could have been,

when the switch is in the middle, if I turn the bridge volume down, it turns both pickups down and the same goes for the neck volume.

so I need to have both volumes at full for me to use both pickups.

If i have one volume knob at say 4, and the other at 10 both pups are at volume 4. and thats the same for both knobs.[angry]

the volume seems to be set by the knob which is at the lowest volume, however, if i have the neck or the bridge pup selected by the switch, this works perfectly [crying]

I hope that this makes sence to someone.............

Yes, unfortunately that is the way that configuration works. Essentially both p_ups and their

respective volume controls (500K) are tied together through the switch contacts, so if you

consider both volume control resistors in parallel, changing one affects the other. The closer

you move to "ground" (turning down the volume) the more it "pulls down" the volume of the

other pickup. it's ohms law Rt = 1/R1 (500k neck) + 1/R2 (500k bridge).

I'm told that if you swap the input from the pickup with the center tap at the Pot this will fix it. I haven't tried this on my SG yet but plan to. You'll also find that if you turn either Pot to "0" in the middle position it turns off both pick-ups. Swapping the input & center tap is supposed to fix this as well.

Food for thought.

EDIT:

Ok, looking at the independent volume controls drawn out on paper, it does look

like reversing the inputs on the center tap is the way to go on Gibson style.

Each 500k pot is parallel tied together with the o/p jack. That effective reduces

the circuit resistance down to 250K and the p_ups connected to the wiper will

be isolated enough that it is not as noticible.

the schematic i used was this

and i followed it to the letter' date=' or so I thought, I'll get pics up once I get home, if there's anything that I might have blatently done wrong please suggest it,

Looks ok, that is the bog standard Gibson wiring.

Beautiful,

thanks Rich,

i'll give it a go.

Well, for starters, you cant use the Gibson style three way in that configuration.

sorry for my naivity, but the standard wiring i had in before was where you could control the vol of each pup when in the middle possition, is that not normal?

-Chris,.
