Awesome thread Fantana... which begs the thread challenge...

'Best Luthier Infultrations'

But a 'point of order of sketchy...

Nuthin' is 'more badass' than a Jr![blink]

It's a lovely project. I'm waiting for a custom made junior guitar thing either' date=' so I kinda feel empathic! But I miss something though. Why isn't there a long tenon while there's plenty of space for it?[confused']

R4's didn't have a long neck tenon. Fantana wants to stay true to vintage specs.

So here's another update for you guys, the guitar is just about to have it's final sand before it gets painted, so Andy asked me to go over and play the guitar so I can make sure I'm happy with the neck profile. He fitted the tuners, bridge and strung her up so I could have a good ol' play [biggrin] The guitar really is as good as it will look, I have never played a guitar with so much sustain and resonance. After I finished playing it I put the P-90 in the cavity for my pictures. The fretboard has now started to darken and Andy has started to prep the rest of the body. My GAS is so bad now I might have to see a doctor.....................

EEEeeeeekkk! It's nekked!! [cool]

I haven't seen one broken down to its major components like that. That's just fantastic. Please keep us posted, although we will all probably have major GAS for a one-off custom now!

There's a type of photography and art called Minimalism...you've probably seen photos of, say, a field and a great stormy sky, and one lone tree off to one side...no people, buildings, etc. to clutter up the scene.

This guitar reminds me of this...it's minimalistic...no frills, binding, fancy grain, it simply has what it needs, yet it is starkly beautiful in its simple lines and gold monotone.

That ugly thing? It's an unfinished plaintop and only has one pickup ferchristsake!

Just kidding Fan, that thing looks better and better everytime I see it.

It's kinda like an LP Jr. GT Deluxe - Limited Edition of 1!

What a great quote, you've nailed it in one exactly what I'm going for with this.

I love the guitar because of it's simplicity and lack of 'funiture' on the body, but minimalism is a much better word!

It does have binding though [biggrin]

That looks like it will be one nice guitar! Does it always take this long to get one made? I can't believe how slow the progress seems' date=' I'd be going nuts by now if I were you. [/quote']

It'll be worth the wait! When I decided to have a custom guitar built, I did alot of research into luthiers to make sure that the very best would be building my guitar. I spoke to professional musicians and guitar techs alike to see who they'd recommend to me. They all came back with Andy Viccars. He seems to build instruments because he enjoys it, rather than becuase he has to.

When speaking to different luthiers, they all quoted between 12-18 months for a custom build and so far it's been a year so he's on track!

I now use him for all of my work, from bowl-back mandolin re-glues, to re-setting gibson bass necks, to electronic upgrades and basic set-ups and service. You should always support your local guitar tech and I will continue to do so.

Yes I agree that progress has been slow recently, but he works on his own in his workshop in his garden and he gets a phenominal amount of set-ups and headstock repairs along with working 3 days a week for Yamaha UK doing freelance work for their artists so I'm completely happy with where he is with the build.

Whenever I go and see the guitar, I know I made the right choice in luthier.

Fantana, I'm LOVING this thread!!! Can't wait to see more pics and

FINISHED Guitar! That is just too cool. When you get to the final

posts of this thread and pics, etc, would you object if I placed a

link to it in the "Do-it-Yourself" sticky/Projects by Forum Members"?

I realize it's done by a Pro Luthier vice one of US, but it's well worth

having a look at just to see what CAN be accomplished... [thumbup].

Thanks Animalfarm for showing interest in this thread, you seem as excited as I am!

I'd love for it to be in the DIY section, it's just so awesome

MAHALO!!! Duly noted, and it shall be done.

EDIT - It's IN...

BTW, anyone else that has done a

project with good pics and explanation, hopefully from start to finish, please

flag me! I'm trying to get a variety of git types. I have other projects I'VE

done, but the documentation is the pits, so no go for the DIY sticky.

It should be ready by august but I'm suffering from some serious GAS now!!!!

Collection shows good taste...I'll take the Firebird and Casino !!

Just got this e-mail from Andy....

Hi Chris,

It's all down to the time that the nitro finish takes to dry

The gold looks matte at the moment, you will only see the sparkle when it's buffed because it's a very fine gold metallic paint.

I will e-mail you a pic when it's buffed

Cheers

Andy

The wait continues..................

For those that don't know, here is what is being built...........

It's having a few 'personal' changes to it:-

- Wine red back and neck

- SD Antiquity P-90

- Compensated wrap-around bridge

I will get pics whenever I'm over there, oh and he's also doing a '59 burst so I'll get some of that too

Then this might interest you, Music Zoo Sale.

Then this might interest you, Music Zoo Sale.

This is what it's based on............

It was originally done as a 1 off for Billy Gibbons (he had different knob positioning) and then for Daves Guitars as a 25 guitar run back in 2003, and then another run of 25 this year. It seems that Music Zoo ordered a batch from the CS too along with those tasty looking '58s, check out the black custom.

Question is.........would you rather pay for the Gibson version, or have one hand-carved and tailor-made for you, for half the price?

Not in the market for anything at the mo, lack of funds, that's why my last 3 or 4 gits have been chinese knock-offs and I had to sell one of my robots to afford them.

Speaking of Billy Gibbons, the Zoo also has THIS ONE.
