hey guys, any ideas what book is the best for learning the guitar, i am able to play but i am unsure on some things, like most people what play guitar i skipped some things because i just wanted to play!

so any ideas for a book for rock and blues (zz top, guns, aerosmith) , power chords, techniques, an overall guide to the guitar what explains in clear and detail

The only Rock book I have tried is this one: http://www.amazon.com/Hal-Leonard-Rock-Guitar-Method/dp/063402566X. It assumes you know some stuff, but I am not quite ready much past chapter 1.

 

For basics, their general Guitar Method series are OK too, they are what our old teacher uses, but are hard to teach yourself with.

seemed good, but I haven't gotten to it yet.

 

 

I kind of lost direction in the Hal Leonard series after book 2 on my own, and went back to Learn and Master Guitar course. THAT is the one I would recommend, along with a good book on scales to keep you active while bogged down trying to learn barr chords and such.

I plan on re-upping with the Rock & Blues books listed above eventually, but the LAMG covers a bit of everything.

I'll second that motion that jmg put forth.

if you want to get back into the learning mode.. that is learning to read music, learning theories, and learning to play.

I highly recommend the Learn and Master Guitar course too.

If I were you, I'd just go to a music store and look at what books they have. Look for one(s) that are at your level and that you can follow.

A good comprehensive course is a great thing, and the one above may well be the one to use (just watched the ad, I am unfamiliar with the course itself, but I do give weight to the testemonials posted above).

 

But there are a plethora of free resources out there on the internet too, worth consideration IMO. Many are free, one such I've found useful is JustinGuitar.com. Check out his You Tube series of lessons. Yes, he asks you to donate if you use and like his lessons. And he certainly does sell product as well. For at least many of the basics (I've not gone through the entire course), it is available at will on the net, and free. You could start one minute from now!

I'll add another vote for L&MG. If it weren't for that course I wouldn't be playing today. Nor would I be purchasing so many darn Gibson's. As much as I didn't think I need all the theory it has really opened up the world of music and made me a better player.
