Celebration- Kool and The Gang - 45

I wish it was something cool but honestly that is the first piece of music I remember buying with my own money. I "borrowed" many Eagles and Elton John tapes and 45's from my older sister but Kool in the Gang was my first purchase. Neither ashamed nor proud. [laugh]

The first one I clearly remember was Led Zeppelin - In Through The Out Door, my friend and I rode our bikes ~5 miles or so to get it, took turns holding it on the way back. LP + Bike + Wind + 4 lane hwy = [scared]

Then I learned about how you can 'color' the inner sleeve [cool]

I always had a tape recorder, even before buying any albums,

so I hardly ever bought albums. My dad was managing a record

shop that went out of business about the same time "Tommy"

was released. I remember that cuz I was working there at Xmas

and he told ALL the adults that were buying for their kids that

"Tommy the Who" was THE ONE.

One of the earliest LP's I recall taping was "Land of the Sky

Blue Waters" by The Nairobi Trio [of Ernie Kovacs fame]. But

mostly I taped from radio, my dad's LP's, and my friends' LP's.

Other borrowed early stuff would be The Ventures. I very much

liked my dad's LP's ... Al Hirt, Jeannie Smith, Arthur Fiedler,

Mohamed El Bakar, Ravel, JP Sousa, Dutch barrel organ and

circus caliope recordings .... he was into some cool stuff ....

He was especially into "Traditional Jazz" ... New Orleans,

Kansas City, River Boat bands, Ragtime, etc.

I remember way back, but would have zero idea what album

I bought the very first time .... but I'd bet dollars to chikinshit

it was from the cut-outs bin !

And acoarst I wore out a zillion 1/4" open reel tape decks. I

know my first decent one was a Grundig, but I can't tell you

what my first album was. I still have a very fine and 100% fully

functional 1/4" Teac deck .... something a friend brought back

from Japen when he finished up in Viet Namm. It's that old. !
