ramffer
Hi, I just bought this strat like epi from some guy in Mexico, I've researched(and with a little help from other members =P) I now it was made in august of 98 in korea, but what I want to know now is from experienced guitar players, I read in some other pages and they all say this is a good starters guitar( which I am) but I want to know if it need more mods if I later on want to keep on playing it or if I should change for a new better guitar, what parts would be better if I changed and all that sort of things thanks
RobinTheHood
Congrats on the guitar! The S-310 is comparable to a Squier and is very upgradable. Pretty much everything on it is upgradable. Its a good modding platform and great for learning how to do modifications. The guitar is great for learning on as well. Some day you will probably want a better guitar, but this is a good one to get started with.

RobinTheHood
Well, if it absolutely needs something to be playable, then yes. If you want to turn it into a "higher end" guitar, then probably not. I guess it really depends on your reasons for upgrading. Most of the upgrades you can make to a S-310 will be compatible with a Fender Strat...within reason. So you could feasible upgrade this guitar and the transfer them to a Fender later on. I dont know if I would personally go this route, but it can be done. Mostly it would be pickups, pots, caps, tuners. Maybe the pickguard and the bridge, but thats a maybe, depending on the model strat it would go on. But really, if you are a beginner, then I dont see any point in upgrading at this point or even worrying about it. Play your guitar and learn as much as you can right now. In a year, look at your skills and equipment and then decide if you think its worth it to upgrade. I'm guessing at that point the answer will probably be no. Your guitar tastes can change alot in that time and you may regret spending money on this guitar if you find that a single coil strat-type guitar isnt for you. Besides, I think that your money would be better spent on other equipment like a good amp, cables, tuner, etc...
KX36
Well, if it absolutely needs something to be playable, then yes. If you want to turn it into a "higher end" guitar, then probably not. I agree with this. The first thing you should do is get it playable and assess how well it is set up, check out how level the frets are, perhaps have it re-set up. I have a squier with the bridge in the wrong position, there's no point in me investing in it because there's not much i can realistically do about that in a cheap guitar. Next comes buying a decent amp that is good enough to actually hear the difference guitar mods can make. I'm not talking valve amps here, but something like a 30W modelling amp like a Vox VT30 or Roland Cube are decent enough; just not something like a Marshall MG100. Next thing is to play the guitar until you have your ears and fingers trained and can reliably say where the guitar is lacking and decide what to mod or what guitar to replace it with. 64CrestwoodCustom
The 310 is MORE THAN good enough to start on! However you should get at least a minimal set-up by someone who REALLY knows what he/she is doing! For an inexpensive practice amp with GREAT TONE, try a VOX Pathfinder 15R ... about $120.00 at the big stores.

An S-310 is much like a Squier in that the right one can be a gem if it is set up correctly. I have a soft spot for these little bangers
ramffer
thanks everyone, right now im looking for the VOX amp but i also saw a Fender frontline 25, I've already tested it with a friend of mine, that is a great guitar player by the way, and told me it would do and its about $120-$130, right now Im just learning how to play without amp and also getting some money from other sax gigs a have... I don't think I remember a "Fender Frontline" amp. Could it have been a "Frontman 25" amp? If it is a front man 25 keep your eyes open for a 25R model. You will appreciate having the reverb. That amp will be a good starter amp, though again, you'll most likely want to upgrade in the future. One other thing, that price seems a bit steep. You can purchase a new 25R from MF for $100 and that includes shipping. I would think that you can find a used one in the $50 to $60 range. Good Luck, I had an S-310 that I really regret selling. It was a nice little guitar.
