ZenKen
Known primarily as a singer/songwriter James Taylor is a pretty amazing guitarist. Not a riffer or a shredder but he has a very unique style. B)
freak show
Frank. Would that be Frank Zappa, or Frank-enstein? Zappa was a master on guitar! He doesn't always get enough credit for his playing.
Laaz
Frank Hannon, very under rated. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKCDqN9cvr4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXWZG9Iy6oQ

saturn
Agreed! Now just add Neil Giraldo (Pat Benatar's guitarist and husband) and thats a fine list. Neil is a great addition. I love especially his playing on Promises In The Dark
Artie Owl
I heard some of Jimmy Vaughan's stuff and I wasn't a big fan of it. Rory Gallagher ftw
S t e v e
The issue of subjectivity rears its ugly head in these threads. I will agree with you on Brian May's noteworthy contribution to rock guitar, but he is NOT under-rated. Ask anybody what they think about Brian May and you will get a thumb up. I'm old enough to remember when each Queen album came out, and was eagerly devoured by EVERYBODY. May gets his due respect in any circle. Freddie Mercury, on the other hand, people had a bit of trouble with... Dead and gone, he's now safely ranked as a legend. In the early eighties he was largely regarded as a freak - immense talent notwithstanding. +1 did i mention that i met brian once?

catass
"Throw down on it Eddy" ... The late, Eddy Shaver is my vote for one of the most under-rated guitar players ...his Pop (Billy Joe) is one of the most under-rated songwriters in any genre
Shnate McDuanus
Jimmy McCarty--first of the very hard-workin', very underrated and very mismanaged Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, and then later of the great, largely-unrecognized "American Zeppelin" known as CACTUS:
MojoRedFoot
Paul Gilbert. Let's face facts. Only a handful of a certain demographic know who he is: guitarists. No one else knows him. A co-worker asked who my fav was. So he was the conversation: Me: I know you expect me to say Kirk Hammet, but I like Paul Gilbert more. Rob: Who? Me: He played for Mr. Big Rob: What did they do? Me: "Next to be with you" Rob: Oooh that group. I have had this conversation with many people. Most musicians I know barely know his name but not his work. I agree, Paul Gilbert is awesome and relatively unknown outside the musician circle. Unless you live in Japan. It seems he's on Japanese TV all the time. Windmills Optional
A few I think don't always get their due: Billy Zoom, Joe Walsh (listen to some of his old James Gang or solo stuff), Dave Alvin.
Mark
I think underrated means different things too different people. Most if not all mentioned guitar players you have mentioned are well respected for their ability, including Frank and Vince I think a guy like Prince is a very good player and not thought of as much of a guitarist. The most underrated maybe not but certainly underrated.
