Gibson CS Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 gibson.com -> products -> les paul pretty easy to fallow, and you can do it on your own =D
Kevylot Posted August 6, 2008 Author Posted August 6, 2008 to be a little less vague..i am in the market for my first LP and am uncertain at this point which to go for, a standard 2008 or the traditional? so just looking for some differences
Kevylot Posted August 6, 2008 Author Posted August 6, 2008 gibson.com fine idea, been there but maybe if anyone has personal experience playing them. I havn't made it to guitar center to try them out yet
Gibson CS Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 my opinion buy a traditional, dont even think about the les paul experimental i mean standard
Kevylot Posted August 6, 2008 Author Posted August 6, 2008 yeah too new to tell eh..thanks for your opinion
hi13ts Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 Go for the Les Paul Experimental. It'll serve you well. No, I'm kidding, I'm just trying to cause Jessenoah grief. Actually, you just have to play both to find out which one you like more. I don't see a huge difference in necks (asymmetrical neck is getting more attention than it needs; it's basically a 50's neck with a slight taper in the high E side). Burstbuckers in the Experimental, '57 Classics in the Traditional. Just play them.
littlekenny Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 Do you want a light guitar or a heavy guitar? Do you want a thicker neck or a slightly thinner neck? Traditional=Heavier and Thicker neck Standard=Lighter and thinner neck like hilts said, you need to play them.
Tim Plains Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 Kevylot, go to a local store and try them out. A Traditional is basically a pre-2007 Standard with different pickups (57 Classics...everybody's favorite). I haven't played a new Standard, but I own a 2006 Standard and I love it.
Kevylot Posted August 6, 2008 Author Posted August 6, 2008 thanks guys, i guess theres no point in trying to fuss which is better without trying either first but since i'm bored here at work i figured i'd try and get some input before i head out to a guitar store. according to prices on guitarcenter.com the traditional is $2299.99 while the standard is $2339.00..$40 difference? difference in pickups? or neck and or both
FennRx Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 i played a Standard this morning. It's ugly. I don't like the tuners (the look at least) and the jack plate is gross. BB Pros are ok, but I would definitely prefer BB1/2. The assymmetrical neck was pretty beefy all over (more beefy than my 50s necks). I didnt really feel a big difference on the high e side. out of the two, the traditional is better. i would just swap the TRC for a blank one and the speed knobs for regular ones. of course, if i were you, i would by a used R7, R8 or G0.
buchananblues Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 to be a little less vague..i am in the market for my first LP and am uncertain at this point which to go for' date=' a standard 2008 or the traditional? so just looking for some differences [/quote'] Being new to the LP scene, and just getting my first LP [Traditional] yesterday, obviously I'm going to say go with the LP Traditional. In my case I did a ton of research and I played ALOT of LP's, including the standard and classic. It's all personal preference, here is what I like about the Traditional (and I'm not knocking the classic or standard at all) and why I bought it. 1) I really like the 50's neck, very comfortable for me, perfect thickness, 2) I prefer the 57 HB's, I found the BB's to be to "bright" for my taste, 3) I wanted the weight, the traditional was as close to a "REAL" solid body re-issue/vos as I could afford, 4) I was intrigued with the "plek'd" system in general and 5) It sounded awesome through high-end tube amps. Oh yeah, mainly, I have always wanted an LP...........My advice is play as many as you can through amps that you have or want.
Thundergod Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 out of the two' date=' the traditional is better. i would just swap the TRC for a blank one and the speed knobs for regular ones. [/quote'] Do you like the "top hat" knobs better than the "speed nobs"? I do: they look better and feel better too IMO. Wonder why so many people "upgrade" to speed knobs...

NeoConMan Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 according to prices on guitarcenter.com the traditional is $2299.99 while the standard is $2339.00 The BEST advice I can give you is to buy ANYPLACE but Guitar Center. Great for shopping and comparing, if you like lies about price and beat up guitars missing parts. Find every independent Gibson dealer in your area, call 'em to see if they have any Traditionals.
Kevylot Posted August 6, 2008 Author Posted August 6, 2008 i agree with you about guitar center..however, all local mom-and-pop shops have become nonexistent ever since guitar center emerged just a town away, so i'm out of luck most likely price-wise in that regard. but there's always musicians friend : )
hi13ts Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 It also really depends if you want a "Traditional" Les Paul, or a newer version. If you're an "old-fashioned, contemporary" guitarist, you'll be able to be happy with the Experimental. I really like it, but many purists really have a problem with all the changes. But if you want a time-tested warrior, that has little change since its beginnings, then get a Traditional. Again, these guys will stress that you have to actually play them.
Gibson CS Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 ha i got you guys to call it the experiemental lol
Silverbursted Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 hai got you guys to call it the experiemental lol Very good!!! OK' date=' I'm going to throw my two cents in. I agree 110% on everything said thus far about the Traditional. I absolutely love mine. Of course, we don't have any idea of the style of music you play or the particular tone you are after. If you are a gigging musician and expect to be on stage for 2 hours a night 5 days a week and you are playing through a wall of Marshalls, then by all means the Standard (er uh Experimental) might do the trick for you. But if you are like the rest of us, and really love the tone of a Les Paul, then the Traditional is the way to go (Not that the Customs or Reisues don't). By all means go over to GC and try out their stuff, but DON'T BUY!!! Once you have decided on which one you want, then either find a local mom and pop shop or contact a store like Bizarre Guitar, who will ship you. MF and GC are the same thing. Good luck, and play hard. And welcome aboard, look forward to hearing/seeing what you get.
FennRx Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 another idea is join the mylespaul.com forum and watch the classified ads. i doubt there will be a traditional there, but you can get some seriously good deals. i bought my R9 from a forum member and I was selling my standard faded for $1250 shipped with paypal! that's a helluva deal! i also would join because it's awesome, not just because there are people selling stuff.
hi13ts Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 By all means go over to GC and try out their stuff' date=' but DON'T BUY!!! Once you have decided on which one you want, then either find a local mom and pop shop or contact a store like Bizarre Guitar, who will ship you. MF and GC are the same thing. . I can't stress that enough! GC has this new policy where the employees can't make deals with the customers, in other words, haggle. They claim that customers don't want to negotiate. Bunches of bologna! All customers want the best deals for what they buy, and it's a shame that Guitar Center will lose a few customers because of that. Also, mom and pop shops usually have more knowledgeable staff unlike Guitar Center. And, Jessenoah, for some reason I found that comment extremely funny. I really like the new name, Experimental, because that's basically what it is. (Which I don't have a problem with)
Kevylot Posted August 6, 2008 Author Posted August 6, 2008 thanks for the input everyone, i'll make sure to check out some local shops and compare prices, bizarre guitar's site doesn't look legitimate but i guess a book shouldn't be judged by it's cover.

NeoConMan Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 can of worms opened. The forum thing is a great idea' date=' most of those guys are like family over there. I've scored a few guitars thru a couple forums and been VERY pleased with the results. [b']Concerning Bizarre Guitar.....[/b] There's not another store in the nation that compares, to my knowledge. Not in LA, Chicago, Phoenix, Dallas, Austin, Houston, Las Vegas... and I've looked at them ALL. Haven't been to see Saul yet in Sandy Eggo, but I'm certain his inventory is smaller. Les Pauls as far as the eye can see. - and these are NOT Epiphoney's Over 80 in stock right now, they just signed a new distribution agreement with Gibson so more are flooding in. I've bought nearly $30,000 worth of gear from them in the last six years, they've ALWAYS treated me very well. Several others here will testify.... Internet is not their big thing, they are an old-fashioned Mom & Pop store owned by Bob Turner for 32 years. The manager, Mike has been there for 24. Check this out if you wanna read more. www.rattlesnakeroadhouse.com/4.html I don't work for them, and I have no financial stake there. I'm simply spreading the word that there IS an alternative to Guitar Center and the MFers.
hi13ts Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 Will Bizarre Guitar be able to haggle over the internet? You know, make deals with their customers?
