58 VOS ?

I'm getting within a few months of a new purchase. Quit smoking New Years and this is my reward. I've narrowed it down, (so far, sheeze) to the 58' VOS. Maybe an ES335. I'm just concerned with the size of the ES335.

I gigged a Les Paul for 14 years around Phoenix, then to La., Then an SG, Strat, and have been playing a Tele for the last few years. Missing the power of the Gibbys, and pulling out my SG for a recording a while back made me realize it's time to come home.

I gig 40/50 weekends a year, bars, and don't like the weight (or lack of) of the new chambered Les Pauls.

Any pros or cons to the 58'? I'm not a collector, I'm a bar musician and it will go straight to work.

As it should!

Thanks in advance.

Congrats on quiting smoking. If your concerned about the size of a 335 maybe you should check out the 339, It's about the same size as a LP and is supposed to be kind of a midway between the 335 and LP.

the 58 (or 57 if you like goldtops) is the best buy in the Reissue line. the only difference between an R8 and an R9 is that the R9 has a thinner neck profile, might be a few ounces lighter and has a flame top. other than that, they are identical. i have a 58 and a 59, and the 58 is the better guitar. YMMV.

the other option is the Guitar Center 1960 reissue (G0). it is a plaintop 1960 without the reflector knobs (not sure if it has the double ring tuners), so it has the thinnest neck, which is still much thicker than a USA LP 50s neck.

hope this helps.

a traditional is really a less expensive version of the CS reissues

look into them, you may like them

other wise the 58 reissue is probably the best bang for your buck in the gibson world

Congrats on quiting! very tough thing to do I've heard. My aunt has "quit" several times. The R8 will probably give you what you want. I know someone that just ordered and R8 in Cherry.

Fennrx, sheeze...... Very nice.

I think I'm worth the extra grand for the VOS, and hate the idea of swiss cheese, but will probably check the Traditional out. My old 72' Recording was solid. But, I was younger too.

I've made 2 trips to Nashville in the last 5/6 weeks and Opry Mills is a very friendly place. I bought a 1933 Gibson mandolin at Gruhns that threw me off course, but it belonged to Scotty Stoneman and I couldn't turn it down.

Thanks.

for what the traditional is priced, you can easily get a used Reissue. You can get a brand new R8 for $2600 most of the time. I recommend this place:

call and talk to Saul. I am not kidding, he will hook you up and is the nicest guy ever from what i hear. there are loads of guys who will ONLY buy LPs from him. if i had bought my R9 new, it would have been from him.

I just got my 58' two months ago and love it! It stays in tune well and sounds just as good clean as with overdrive and distortion. People almost evertime I play tell me how good my tone is and how great it sounds. The 58 is a heavy guitar, has awesome tone, sounds sick with unison bends and all bends, and has a thick neck which took me about a week or two to get comfortable with.

Where did you get this from? No it's not' date=' the two guitars are worlds apart.

Any cons to a R8? The only con I can think of is there is little or no taper in the volume/tone knobs. Just the way they are....but, you can always put in an upgrade.

Some will say that R8s are expensive, but I say they're worth every penny.

I got my R8 New with Case, Candy and Warranty on sale for $2243.00 out the door!

The Traditional is $2300 plus tax (in CA 8.5%=$195.50) bringing total to $2495.50!

The conclusion: My R8 cost $252.50 less than a "less expensive version" of my guitar!

More Bang For My Buck Indeed!!

I am the person who ordered the R8 in Washed Cherry. Now I get to wait 2 months!

R8 is a great choice!

Congrats on quitting, I quit trying to quit, nothing worked for me. I do smoke less, but the savings are such that I could afford a Gibson after I can maybe retire.

If I ever get another 20% off coupon from MF [i'll roll the dice one more time & order online], my next LP will be a 58 VOS or ES335 [both are great]. I am so impressed with my new traditional.......I think I'm hooked on LP's. #-o

Murph -

I, to owould recommend the 58 if you go the Les Paul route and the big neck is not an issue for you.

But..........

You may want to look at the new 339, or the 336. The 336 may be the guitar for you if you are torn between an LP and a 335.

I have the 2008 LP Standard with a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates in it and it's amazing! I think you could play any gigs you want with this setup. If you want the additional weight of a completely solid (weight relief swiss cheese holes) body then go with the Traditional. These new models with the Plek'd frets are super-consistent and good values. If it's possible to get a '58 VOS for just a little more, that might be the best choice, though the original bridge will scrape up your palm. The LP Standard and Traditional have the revised TOM bridge.

Wow! I don't know about you, but I would be upset if I just bought paid for a R9 and it didn't out perform the R8 I already owned. How do you like the R9? (This could be it's own thread)

get the 58 best bang for the buck in the reissue line. Got mine out the door including tax at $2600 new from bizarre guitar in phoenix last year. it was a guitar 2 of the 5 people who work there wanted, so they ask me about it when I get there!

I can't stand the whole contrived VOS thing, but it occurred to me that it might be a great fit for you.

If that guitar is gonna be working for a living 40 weeks a year, the inevitable wear & tear will not alter the character.

Might be a good thing after all.

Are you okay with the massive neck profile?

I'm sure you are if you play that much.

i love it, one day i love the 59, the next day the 58. i have a few guitars I think about all the time, my 58, 2 59s, EVH wolfgang, new fender american strat, my es 333 and my prs custom 24. I think my washed cherry 59 is my favorite..lot fat necks, but like thin women!

+1

Traditionals are basically Les Pauls with all the specs of a CS model. i prefer a 60s model because of the neck.

Traditionals are basically Les Pauls with all the specs of a 1990s model. (PUs are 57s and not 490/498)
