Les Paul Square Frets?

Recommended Posts

I recently bought an ebony double cut LP from GC, I think it was an "exclusive" model to them last year. I like the tone and the looks a lot, but the frets took some getting used to. They look like either a) square wire was used or O:) they were leveled without being crowned. Does anyone know which is the case? The fret ends are also covered with binding. It looks as if very wide binding was used then cut away between the frets. I saw frets exactly like this on a 339, so I know it isn't just for their "cheap" guitars. I don't consider 1800 a cheap guitar! Does Gibson do this procedure to all their bound fretboards now, and what is the reason? Thanks in advance for the info.
