donald1956 Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 I have noticed lately that when a celebrity poses with a Gibson guitar "Gibson" is removed from the headstock. In the old days we would say it was airbrushed, but I'm sure it's done with computer now. Why do they do this? The only thing I can think of is that Gibson withholds permission unless they are paid something. If that is the case, it makes no sense to me. It would be the best kind of free advertising for them, unless they feel they don't need it. I only remember one specific artist, Lenny Kravitz posing with an obvious LP Custom Black Beauty. Any information on this would be appreciated.
Tim Plains Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 Maybe it's so the artist doesn't have to pay Gibson? Ever watch The Trailer Park Boys? Every logo is censored from that show so they don't have to pay royalties.
ChanMan Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 More likely, it is because Gibson refused to pay them to display it, so they kill the logo so Gibson gets no free PR.
ChanMan Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 Alternatively, it could be a consipracy by Brand F and Eddie Van Halen to obliterate Gibson from music everywhere.
NeoConMan Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 Funny how that works. Copyright & trademark protection gets nutty in a hurry. Companies pay huge $$$ to place their products as they intended, always in a favorable light. They want complete control over the public perception of their brand, and will sue at the drop of a hat.
Murph Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 I think it's more of a "product placement" thing where Gibson refuses to pay Disney any extra money for the Jonas Brothers using Gibsons, so they black it out. I mean, it's pretty petty if you ask me. You'll see the Marshalls without logos too. (I have a young daughter and am forced to see some of the Hannah, Jonas stuff!) If I was a Jonas boy, I would insist they quit making me look like I was playing a no-name guitar! Ya know what I mean. Murph.
surfpup Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 If I were a Jonas boy, I wouldn't care what I played because the $ and the chicks are rollin' in.
hi13ts Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 It just seems so stupid. I know I'm sounding very redundant, but things like this is just so stupid that it's hard to imagine. I'm pretty sure that Murph hit the nail on the head on the "product placement". I, too, would insist that they would quit making me play a no-name guitar. (Given the skills of the Jonas Brothers on guitar, I don't even think that they deserve to play Gibson guitars)

cvansickle Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 I noticed this last Sunday. Lenny Kravitz was on the cover of the Kohls ad in the paper. He was holding what looked like a Jimmy Page LP Custom, but the headstock had its logo missing - a baaaaad airbrush job at that!
RichCI Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 Probably because, like me, they refuse to be sellouts. This message sponsored by:
Thundergod Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 If you were a Jonas you would be a girl not a boy. Just like the Hanson sisters.
